The Real Life section has grown long and nattery and the "examples" are increasingly off topic. Can we just axe it?

Hm, I don't see anything that requires such a drastic measure to be issued out. Just clean up the natter and everything should be fine.

It's more the fact that I keep cutting it down and it seems to attract eight times as much natter as the rest of the article combined.

The section is not that long, and there are a couple legit examples. The change blindness one (though not the nattery comments below it), and the comment about magic tricks is a well-documented technique for prestidigitators.

The stuff that's personal observation (the hide-and-go-seek example, all the convention examples) should be sliced, as well as the natter. Also, I'm moving the Anthony Bourdain example to the Live Action TV folder (since it did specify that it was shown on his show).

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

Bump. I see Real Life is still here. Was it cleaned up?

No, it wasn't. No concensus and it keeps getting longer.

I question whether this trope really applies to Real Life. I mean, yeah, maybe in a select few instances, but not enough to warrant a Real Life section. It's supposed to be about utterly fantastic things, not "there was some weird lady with strange hair today but I didn't notice and my friend had to point it out," or something similar (just a random example I made up).

I wouldn't shed a tear if the RL section went bye-bye...

I agree. Natter or no natter, I think this is a case of Square Peg Round Trope.

I cleaned it up again, and it's much shorter than it was when this topic was made — it's down to 3 bullets and no sub-bullets or natter. The few that are left, I think are valid, take a look and let me know.

Well, I spelling-fixed one of them... the geocache one is strangely worded; I can't really make out what it's supposed to mean...

"Act weird while you're looking for the cache or looking for a place to put the cache, and people will ignore you instead of watching to see what you're doing."

Y'know, I probably should have just changed it to say that...sad

...why would you have to look weird when you're geocaching? I've done it, and it's just taking a walk in the park... but with a fancy toy as a map to a specific location...

Presumably so that you don't lead others to it. It seems to me it would be more important when you're planting a cache than when you're looking for it. Someone who is curious about what you're doing while you're hiding one is likely to walk over after you leave to see what you did. If they aren't a cacher themselves, they may well take it or move it or otherwise mess it up.

We should probably clarify that, then. Someone with no knowledge of geocaching will just be like, "lol, wut?"

The Real Life section is still clean and the geocaching entry seems to have been cleared up. Is there consensus to keep?

It currently looks good to me. I see no reason to cut the section.

Continue to keep an eye on it, please, and clean as necessary. Locking.
