The picture just doesn't show the trope well, and it's not supposed to be so dark that some monitors won't show it well.

You know what this could use? A picture of some shadows with glowing eyes looking out. Unfortunately, GIS isn't cooperating.

Googling the term itself comes up with quite a few [1]

Something classic?

And if I claim to be a wise man, well, it surely means that I don't know.

Is the concern that the old pic is hard to see, or that it doesn't display the trope properly?

Both. I explicitly mentioned both in the OP.

Okay, so doesn't our pic actually need to show somebody/something being dark AND evil? Most of the pics have had the "dark" component, but I don't think any of them have had an explicit "evil" component. Sure, most of them look evil, but that's because of this trope rather than illustrating the trope.

Looking demonic is enough. I mean, this one has a sinister expression (when a skull isn't supposed to have one), and Glowing Eyes of Doom + Red Eyes, Take Warning.

That doesn't work very well, because of all the other Evil markers. The "darkness" is the least of them.

Well in that case, I support the image suggested in post #9.

Current picture is fine. The fact that you think it looks scary means it is doing its job.

I didn't claim it looks scary itself. I wrote it looks like a spooky place. That is not the trope.

Would a pic of Vader and Palpatine standing together at the end of Revenge Of The Sith work?

I do like the Chernabog better than the current pic.

Alrighty, that's enough votes for Chernabog to get the go-ahead. The pic is up, potholed, and tagged; caption or no?

I wouldn't mind a caption.grin

On an unrelated note, anyone else pleased with the Playing With section I made? It's not yet done though
