Just stumbled across this and noted the TRS tag at the top. I think it's a good enough trope, but I think the name is terrible. Named after a character, and not, I don't think, a particularly well-known one at that. The stats aren't bad, but I suspect they could be better. Haven't investigated misuse, but, at the least, I think some redirect farming is in order, if not an outright rename.
Gene Hunt Interrogation Technique found in: 39 articles, excluding discussions.
This title has brought 342 people to the wiki from non-search engine links since 20th FEB '09.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.Noticed this and decided to bump. Dunno if it needs cut but I think we could easily find a better name.
SPATULA, Supporters of Page Altering To Urgently Lead to Amelioration (supports not going through TRS for tweaks and minor improvements.)I vote cut. The title is awful and unless there's more of a distinction than Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique, Played for Laughs, it's not a trope in and of itself.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It looks to me like just Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique but played for laughs and/or absurdity. So another vote for cut — we can put any examples of this on that page with a note saying how it's been played with.
A request was made to attach a crowner to this discussion and I have complied with that request although this discussion looks pretty cut and dried. I am also clocking. If nothing happens in three days I say cut it.
351 inbounds is enough that I'm not really a fan of cutting. I'd rather merge, if anything.
Rhymes with "Protracted."I WOULD say 'cut' if this was a new trope, but it has so many inbounds and is at least a year old. Rename, merge, whatever, but don't cut.
I've seen lots of other tropes that are "When X, where X is a normally non-comedic situation or occurrence, happens for comedy reasons" and no one is demanded those tropes be cut. So what is it about this one that is drawing so many people's ire?
Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.Like what?
Like Do Not Answer A Question With A Question, for one.
Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope. Is that supposed to be sarcastic? Hope not.
Anyway, I haven't to come across trope that's purely a Playing with a Trope variation of another trope. I don't think we have any.
Including this one. These are separate tropes that stand on their own, not just "Playing with..." other tropes.
And no, my previous statement is not sarcasm. Its a request that my question be answered and not sidetracked. But if it will actually aid in getting an answer, the first line of Hilariously Abusive Childhood is "When Abusive Parents are Played for Laughs." That trope... and it is a trope and not simply something being "played with"... stands on its own, as does this one.
And that's just one example.
So... what is it about this one that has you pissed off enough to want to cut it?

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope. This is the only one. If there are any other cases I'd like to know.
Why? So you can call for a cutlisting of them, too?
Now please, answer the damned question.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.Less aggressive, please, Worldmaker.
Given the number of wicks and examples, I do think this seems like it could stand as a common subtrope of JBIT. Not a big fan of the name, but that's not the discussion at hand.
Edit: Also,

Welcome To TV Tropes | How To Write An Example | Text-Formatting Rules | List Of Shows That Need Summary | TV Tropes Forum | Know The StaffI don't know what you want me to say that's hasn't already been said. Gene Hunt Interrogation Technique is Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique Played for Laughs that's not a separate trope.
Sorry... but when you expressly request that your question be answered and not sidetracked twice, and the person you are asking does nothing but dodge and weave, it tends to irritate.
I'd personally still like to see an answer to my question.
Why not?

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope.Isn't that just Cold-Blooded Torture?
edited 28th Oct '11 6:41:30 AM by captainpat
No. "Cold-Blooded Torture" is non-emotional, clinical, and precise. Think Szell the dentist from Marathon Man. In any case, you're just pointing out another trope that this one is Sub to.

Being in a Japanese-produced work is not enough of a difference to warrant its own trope. It doesn't say anything like that on the trope description and the trope picture seems to imply the opposite of non-emotional, clinical, and precise.

Allow me to point something out:
"We did it to [that trope], therefore we must also do it to [this trope]" is at best a very weak argument.
The subject of this thread is not "Can a thing be a trope when it is best described as "other trope, but played with in some way"?"
That would be an appropriate topic for a thread in Trope Talk. If you want to discuss it (and I mean discuss it, not scream at each other about it) go there and make a thread.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I'm sorry, but apparently I missed something. If what you say is true, then why is this in the TRS and not in the Trope Talk?
And who was screaming?

This thread is in TRS because it was made to decide what to do with a specific trope — Gene Hunt Interrogation Technique. For the last page, you and Captainpat have been fighting over a meta-question raised by that repair discussion. Take the Meta-question to Trope Talk. It's not appropriate for TRS.
You and Captainpat are having what reads like a screaming match.

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Hm, does this include Cool and Unusual Punishment type of things?
Fight smart, not fair.
Crown Description:
What would be the best way to fix the page?
Gene Hunt Interrogation Technique is Jack Bauer Interrogation Technique but Played for Laughs or Refuge in Audacity. I know this because that is exactly what the first line of the description says.
Previous discussions ring in my mind about how important it is that a subtrope have something different in itself and shouldn't be just a Playing with a Trope variation. A guy is getting punched in the balls for information that's the trope. Whether I am meant to laugh or cry at that is the writers' perogative.
