During their Anime Expo 2011 panel, Aksys Games stated that they will be localizing the PSP Eastern RPG Fate Extra. It's one of several complex games based on the adult visual novel Fate Stay Night. The company plans to release an English version in 2011 on both UMD and PSN. It will include the original Japanese voiced dialogue, as well as optional dubbed dialogue.

This seems like a fairly niche game. Hopefully it can be enjoyed without any prior knowledge of the F/SN universe. I'm not sure how many people will buy it... especially with the PSP's lack of success outside of Japan, and with the Vita on the horizon. If it's a compelling game, then it might succeed... but there's a long history of bad-to-execrable licensed games.

I can't even remember what the FSN general fanbase's reaction was to Extra. Or if there even was one.

All I recall is people bickering over whether Saber Nero looking just like Saber Arthur was good or stupid.

I could do with less obnoxious Panty Shot myself, since Saber, you know, carries a certain level of dignity, among other things, with her. Of course, I find that sort of stuff obnoxious on anyone.

Well now that I finally got my copy imported to my house, I'm having a blast with this game.

Anyways, I'm going to ask these questions out of curiousity...

  • What class is your servant?
  • What gender is your master/protagonist?
  • What's your master's first and last name?
  • What's your master's nickname?

My answers...

  • Saber since she's the class for Novices.
  • Female master. The artbook I got from my limited edition copy show Saber and the female master together so that influenced my choice. That and the Les Yay.
  • My master is called Diane Hunt. I was originally going to go for Mary Sue as a joke but after giving her the nickname Hunter (a typical Mary Sue name) that name suddenly popped up in my head and had a nice ring to it!

Regarding Aminatep's question... I'm not sure what a person should read, watch, or play first in the Fate universe. Looking near the top of the Fate Stay Night page, it looks like most people consider the anime TV spinoff and the manga spinoff to be competent adaptations of the original visual novel. (It's a lengthy, wordy visual novel, and fans don't have many good things to say about its sex scenes... but it seems to be considered the first and best version.)

Bought Fate Extra, getting started. So far so good. It kinda seems like a Persona 3 or 4 fangame, though the combat is a guessing game sort of like the duels in Suikoden 1.

The game's pretty slow to start off, but once you get past the prologue it jumps in pretty quickly. I'm liking the whole investigating your opponent thing, and I'm certain once I get out of this tutorialish week poor Shinji, again religated to being the first to die... the systems will get more complex.

I started with Saber, by the way. I do have a save right before the prologue ends so I can start up two more saves with Archer and Caster, through.

Mr Dolomite's statement is accurate. The intro isn't as long as Dragon Quest 7, and at least there's a counter which ominously states how many days are left until something happens. Also, the intro reminded me of a shorter version of the first few days of Persona 4.

One more thing — the game states several times how dull the main character is, and how he seems to act like an NPC. This is quickly Played for Drama.

Guh, as a big fan of the original Fate Stay Night, this makes me wish that I had a PSP. T_T

Pretty good thus far- I'm rather surprised at how Dan Blackmore is all Honor Before Reason, though. Especially when I'm pretty sure that his Servant is a certain outlaw from Sherwood Forest.

Also, awww, Caster is ridiculously cuddly.

I picked up the limited Gamestop online edition with the little side-magazine. It's like a small handbook (disappointment, noone was telling me it'd be small. I was Expecting Someone Taller )

I haven't cracked open the plastic yet though. I have a project due in about 11 days, so I need to focus and I'll save it as my reward.

I'm thinking I'll go with archer, since he seems more in the middle for difficulty and since he's also Archer, it'll be like me. Entered into this strange world with so many people and not as we know them.

Beat it as Saber. She was an entertaining character to say the least not to mention that after some point, she proclaims that she was using the Power of Love. As always, I am amazed at Nasu's ability to make almost anyone sympathetic.

Oh, there is a new game plus that lets you skip the prologue if you load from it and imports some items.

I feel conflicted now. Should I play as the badass Archer now, or the magical fox girl? On one hand, it is GA Rcher. On the other hand, it's a magical fox girl. Those things are pretty rare player characters.

So he manages to make Nero sympathetic? That's quite a achievement, figuring Saber's historical counterpart is always a villain, and for the most part is quite a monster.

[up]Yes, poor guy. Loved the people passionately, but wasn't loved back. History class never did cover the (few) good things Nero did.

It's probably because I'm a sap, but I even felt sorry for the psychopathic cannibal once she died.

So I've been taking the game pretty slowly. I'm on the last day before the first major battle.

I'm kinda wondering how I'm suppose to get my matrix to level E. The first time I went through the dungeon, I confronted Shinji immediately, and while he dropped some hints as to his servant's identity I didn't get anything in the matrix. But, when I retried and just got the treasures he missed, they just warped out without really saying anything.

Did I miss something painfully obvious?

[up]Right before your elimination battle, go back to your room and organize your information. Answer the questions correctly, and you get level E.

Which Servant should I start with? I hear Saber is the best one for beginners but Archer is my favourite non-Rin character from FSN so I'm a bit tornish.

I'm actually more torn the other way between Caster and Archer. Archer I like (who doesn't), and caster seems more like my playstyle. I don't like the concept of using Nero as much, as I consider his real life equivalent a complete monster. Your name isn't used as the "number of the beast" for no reason. Saber-Nero may be different, but I have my bias.

I wanna see Lightcycle and Pirate Rider in action. Just gotta finish my projects first before I crack this open...

Really? Alright, she's off the list for now.

Is there set difficulty levels? Like normal easy hard (not counting which servant you pick)
