...YKTTW it again. I agree that it's a trope, and I'm sure I've seen it outside anime/manga/other Japanese fiction, so...

I am now known as Flyboy.

...Borg Cubes have funny cylinders sticking out of them? Since when?

This isnt Anime specific either. I'm almost positive I've seen it in Front Mission 3 (tried to find pics, but every screencap looks like mud.)

Had no idea Greeble was a thing, but that would probably be a better idea for a trope. Support making Greeble a trope and adding this to it.

[up]I assume he meant greebles in general, not Anime Armor Cylinders specifically.

And yeah, making a greeble supertrope wouldn't be a bad idea, but I still think this is tropleable — as a greeble subtrope, if nothing else.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

Yeah, I agree. If I could only remember where I've seen it, I could probably provide lots more examples.

@ the pic on the last page.... They still look just like Rivets or just tops of bolts to me.

And a Greeble is what exactly? (as it pertains to a trope)

Greeble is the Cow Tools of designing spaceships or robots or mechanical things. They're doodads that serve no in-story function, and are added by the prop makers just to make the thing more visually interesting.

I have seen this sort of thing before, but the only thing I can think of off the top of my head are the Mark I droid walkers from Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast.

In any case, I agree with the previous suggestions.

Oh boy... That better be an exampleless trope or people are just going to go into Example as a Thesis mode and spend pages deconstruct every Mecha, starship, etc. in each series down to "why paint them" or "why do mecha have heads" with natter counterpoints and such.

YKTTW it, I say. There is a trope here, but the way its written is terrible. A Greebles supertrope wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I laugh in the face of suffering.

They still look just like Rivets or just tops of bolts to me.
Which they may very well be. The question is, why are they there (ie, what are they bolting together) and why are they so comically large? The answer to both is basically, "to look more interesting than a blank surface", which would be the point of a greebles trope.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

That wasnt my point.. Riveted Armor or something might make a good trope, but this as it's current form? No.

It could be a Greeble or it might not. A Zaku II from Gundam has shoulder spikes which were probably a Greeble till the shoulder charge was introduced later. A kneecap with sort of the same thing it could have a use.

Anyway Identifying something as a Greeble is a natter magnet with Justifying Edit and will probably be treated as Tropes Are Bad.
