First we should start with the main characters.Wheeler would be the most impulsive but he would be more smarter. He would also be more eviormentally aware but it mostly involves around urban areas.Mati would still have heart and be from Brazil.Kwame would need to get more of a personality and be from Ghana.Gi would need to change her name because for one things it's a Vitamese name and a boys name.I am thinking Mizu(japanese for water)would be a good name for her and she would be from Japan.Linka will need a name change since her name is not really a legitimate Russian name;for her rename I am thinking Ava.I also think that in the show they would be smarter and more creative with their power. Most of all they only call on Captain Planet if its very urgent. Also Captain Planet needs to get a new weakness that is not pollution.I also think Zarm should be the major big bad of the series that sends out evil spirits of destruction to find humans to host so they can become his minions and help him devestate the earth. The story would be enviormental but it also would have more character development and focus. And the Planeteer Alerts would be done away with since the show is one big enviormental piece. Also the issues won't be one-sided and it would be good to add an eco-terrorist group to show what happens when you takes things too far.

Dude, the enter/return key isn't a poison dispenser. Paragraphs, man. tongue

On the thread subject, if by "better" you mean less of a joke in the "so bad it's good" manner, off the top of my head I'm not sure much can be done. Environmental issues are much more complex than can be fit into a 20-odd minute cartoon, and that's before you even get into the gratuitously exagerated strawmen foes from the original show.

I'd either go for the So Bad, It's Good factor or at least give the villains a goddamn reason other than being eeeeeevil.

Dum dee dum.

What if I designed Captain Planet?

Our world is in peril. Gaia, spirit of the Earth could no longer stand the destruction we humans plagued our planet with. She could no longer hold together the seal that kept the Spirits of Destruction dormant. Now that they've escaped, all Gaia can do is try her best to hold the planet together, therefore, she cannot leave her sanctuary.

Therefore she sent 6 magic rings to 6 special young people. Kwame from Africa with the power of Earth, Jason Wheeler from North America with the power of Fire, Linka from Russia with the power of Wind, Gi from Southeast Asia with the power of Water, and Ma-Ti with the power of heart.

Sent on the journey to find the planet orb, the Planeteers use it to summon earth's greatest hero, Captain Planet in order to fend off the Spirits of destruction and delay the pollution and disaster we humans destroy our planet with. And when he doesn't feel like fighting, the good captain channels his powers through the orb and into the planeteers so they can learn how to deal with things themselves. Sometimes he gives his power to one planeteer, sometimes to all of them, and if he's feeling really mean he'll merge them all into one Captain Planet body while he sits around and watches them deal with things themselves.

But what of the sixth ring? That ring of Electricity lies hidden with the mysterious planeteer from Australia...

I think for the Australian sixth ranger should go to an aborihgine girl named Kylie who is a spunky fifteen year old who does photography as a hobby.I think Gi and Linka they should have name changes as well:Gi to Mizu and Linka to Ava. I also think that the opening should state which country the all come from. Kwame-Ghana Wheeler-United States Linka(Ava)-Russia Gi(Mizu)-Japan Mati-Brazil

What do I think would make it better?

I know. DON'T REMAKE IT.

Now it's better.

I gotta agree with Kyun. For better or worse, Captain Planet was fine as it was and I honestly don't see how the premise could possibly be improved, without making it a whole new show (and if its a new show, why call it a remake?)

For the sake of keeping the name of an already familiar show.

Reverse the morality. The antagonists from the original show are now the protagonists and vice versa.

As mentioned above, the environmentalist messages the show tried to convey were all simply too complex for a 22 minute kids show, which is why the show was so anvilicious.

How about this make the enviormental message subtle and focus more on the character developement and relationship between characters.

I'd drop the "pollution" theme, and have the "Ecovillains" all agents of Zarm the way the Planteers are agents of Gaia.

In my mind, the difference between Gaia and Captain planet would be that while Gaia is the spirit of the Earth itself, Captain Planet is the physical form. Pollution doesn't affect him, only what could actually put a dent in the planet. Summoning him requires the situation to pass the Godzilla Threshold, since his immense power, kept only in check with the Power of Heart, could easily level all of civilization should he get out of control.

I'd have Kwame as less of a Standardized Leader and more of the calm and collected precision fighter. Wheeler would be the hotheaded brawler, who prefers brute force and, unlike the cartoon, would actually be a viable strategy in some situations. Not sure on Gi and Linka, but Ma-ti would be more of a Beware the Nice Ones type of guy, and and could probably use his power to harmlessly subdue enemies.

Not sure which Ecovillains would be present, but they'd most definitely have the Iron Fists. I'd think I'd want Duke Nukem and Dr. Blight, definitely. Zarm himself would, of course, be the Big Bad.

Perhaps we'll talk when you know what a paragraph is. And I was going to name the girl Jayne and she was going to be a cynical person with biting sarcasm and rubs a lot of the others the wrong way, Especially Wheeler. And Linka and Gi have little to nothing wrong with their names so neh.

I'd have Kwame as less of a Standardized Leader and more of the calm and collected precision fighter. Wheeler would be the hotheaded brawler, who prefers brute force and, unlike the cartoon, would actually be a viable strategy in some situations.
Definitely agree, I dinfitely thought of somehting akin to this.

I was also planning on having Wheeler's ring solar powered, or rather to give him a similar limitation Gi could also condense water from the air to use that but only in small bursts. And unless his ring was charged by the sun before hand, Wheeler needed to use an external source of fire.

I'd drop the "pollution" theme, and have the "Ecovillains" all agents of Zarm the way the Planteers are agents of Gaia.
I actually like this better than my "Spirits of Destruction" that were essentially going to mutate well meaning scientists like Duke Nukem and Dr. Blight into monsters in a fit of irony.

In fact that could still work if Zarm decided to make his agents by force, perhaps he wants a world of destruction and conflict that he could raze and then start anew, essentially weakening and overthrowing Gaia.

Perhaps he took a Nuclear physicist Duke Nukle' and turned him into an irradiated radiation consuming mindless beast, something like the Hulk, a brilliant man slave to his own body. Dr. Blight could be being controlled by an AI she invented, MAL, corrupted by Zarm... I don't think much need to be done with Lutin Plunder, I mean apathetic business tycoon akin to DCAU Lex Luthor is a good enough bad guy on it's own.

Not sure on Gi and Linka
I'm not sure about Linka but I'd definitely make Gi the smart guy and a pragmatic fighter.

The reason why I suggested a name change for Gi and Linka because I heard there names are a case of "as long as it sounds foreign".

If Gi was Japanese so it would be smart to give her a Japanese name. Also because Linka wasn't an apporiate name for a girl who is from Russia.

One of the things the show was ridiculed for was it did not do much of its research. If one does their research on the subjects it makes the show better which includes names.

I would like to point out Gi is actually from China and that becuase the word/name Linka has far eastern European origins it would not be nonsensical if that wash er name despite being from Russia beleive it or not a lot of osmosis happens and people can be called anything for any reason.

No where in the show did it say Gi was from China. Also in an interview her voice actress said that she might be Maylasian or Japanese.

Also Gi is a Vitamese name and not to mention a boy's name.Yes,if you are trying to make Gi from China then give her an actual Chinese name which is also a boy's name.

People will notice that you do care about doing research.

I could have sworn Gi was from China.

My take? Take out Captain Planet and just make it The Planeteers. I do think it would be more interest at the end of the day if the kids themselves were the ones solving the problems instead of always relying on Captain Planet. "The Power is Yours!" would be so much a more appropriate message that way.

[up]That's why in my version I make the cap a bit of a jerkass and have the planeteers use his powers instead if he doesn't feel like doing the work or feels like they can handle things themselves.

That's a good idea.We need more focus on the Planeteers.

Captain Planet might look good for the marketing but the planeteers actually carry the story.I think as a shout out to the original show they would bring a deus machina that resembles Captain Planet so they can defeat Zarm in the series finale.

I like my Godzilla Threshold idea, myself. He's powerful. Really freakin' powerful. And has all the subtlety of mother nature herself. Plus, maintaining him would put a huge strain on the summoners, and require a continuous effort on their part to keep him summoned.

He also has to at least have one summoning sequence with a Gainax-style Badass Arm-Fold.

Meh, I was more in favor of powering him down some and just making him really clever and making him a better Trickstor Mentor role than an all powerful deus ex machine
