Malevolent Architecture , and stuff like spawning monsters, opening portals, playing mind games.

So who are the main villains?

First book, Baldur, second, mad clockwork robot, third, the measuerers, fourth, various stripes of alien.

Have you settled on specific species for the various aliens?

One is a race that cheery picks genetic traits to add to itself, it wants magic.

Are a bunch of species going to team up against it because that species hunted them, too?

Yes, they want to infect the with something virulent and deadly, so it will enter the race's gene pool.

So they want to introduce a deadly gene defect. How are they going to get past whatever failsafes the race has in place?

Disguise it as something positive.

Wouldn't they have to sacrifice someone for that to work?

Yes they try to sacrifice C and M, who are already dying due to their family tree's poisoning.
