Eh, I've never had a problem with it, but I very rarely "admit" that I'm a gamer: I just play games I like. If person(s) I'm talking to has no interest, I don't see the point of discussing it with them.

But then again, I just don't like labels very much. I'm not gay, I just screw dudes.

...You know, since you expressed your distaste toward labelling so I won't use it to you but I don't think I could blame anyone calling a guy who screw doods gay unless you were talking about the older time adjective. Or you were exaggerating. Or you are a G.I.R.L. (Girl In Real Life). Or you were being figurative.

Its not cool to admit to be a gamer because in general there seems to be a large number of gamers whose sole apparent joy is telling people what they should and should not like, how the past was better than now and that their own tastes are all that matter.

Its why people often say "I play games" instead of being a "gamer" because frequently saying the latter groups you in with the kind of person who would write 18 paragraphs describing a fault in any particular game instead of doing something more vital.

I actually agree with what Wong said about gameplay and violence, though I'd like to add what Extra Credits had to say on the subject.

Are you talking about the "mowing down" bit?

I'm the only person in my circle of friends who'd even think about playing a computer RPG older than Mass Effect, but I still make sure they hear about everything I do in the games, whether they like it or not.

Hmm. I'm willing to give him credit on the basic gist of a lot of these (especially the one about the industry thinking that we're all douchey teenagers).*

As to the specifics? Not so sure.

Since I don't own X Box therefore X Live connection, I am curious, do you REALLY run into some players who are or act like twelve year old kids (if you ARE a twelve year old player who is NOT jerkass, save it, I'm not going to reply) hurling a smorsgard of profanities?

Do you not run into those people in online games generally? I meet that everywhere I go to try to play at least halfway competitively - WoW, HoN, LoL, DotA, Counter-Strike, Battlefield you name it. Usage of common sense will probably tell you that Xbox is the console the teenagers will get most likely.

[up] Well, practically no one from where I live plays any video game, but rather computer games, even then, it has been a long time since last time I played Counter Strike so I don't really remember, at any rate.
