3DS is a stupid name (if a bit cute). As is 2DS. As is New 3DS. As is Wii U. I don't expect the next handheld to be called 4DS, but we don't have a better short name to call it, and I expect it to have an equally stupid name.
It can travel through time and space though.
Insert witty 'n clever quip here.Oh, 3DS is a stupid name too, don't get me wrong. Cute, but stupid. The only reason it's even called that is because people wouldn't stop calling it that before the official announcement, and Nintendo decided to stick with the free brand recognition. But at least that's its official name. Likewise, 2DS has a meaning (it's a 3DS without 3D), and New 3DS is Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Wii U has no excuse but again, that's what its actual name is.
4DS doesn't mean anything. And doesn't make sense as just the next in the string, because it would be the third generational iteration of the DS, not the fourth.
EDIT: As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure "DS" itself comes from Nintendo rolling with public opinion, too. It initially stood for "Developer's System", since Nintendo was really pushing how great it was to work with. They actually changed the name to "Nitro", but people had gotten it into their heads that "DS" stood for "Dual Screen" and so they changed it back.

If they can successfully produce a handheld device capable of rendering a tesseract in a way that makes it percievable to the human mind, then can we call it the 4DS?
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Well looking back, the original DS was the primary Nintendo handheld in various forms from 2004 until the 3DS's release in 2011. That's seven years. On the other hand, the Game Boy Advance was released in 2001, giving it a period of only three years. Odd, the GBA feels like it was around longer than that, although part of that may have been because it shared shelf space with the DS for a couple years into its lifespan. I guess by this logic, holiday 2016 is the very earliest we could plausibly see a 3DS successor, but if they plan on giving it a lifespan similar to the original DS, it could be as late as 2018 as well.
For consoles though, it seems like Nintendo consistently gives them 5-6 years before releasing a new generation, even going back to the time between the NES and SNES launches. Comparing the year gaps between console and handheld generations, it could be because Nintendo has had to stay in sync with other console makers when releasing new systems going back to the days of the Genesis, whereas they've never really been threatened by competition in the handheld market, so they've mostly been able to set their own schedule in terms of hardware revisions there.
The next hand held should be called HDS, instead of 4DS, IMO.

Watch Symphogear5-6 years is usually how long a generation of consoles lasts in NA period.
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!Yeah, consoles usually last about 5-6 years. The Nintendo 3DS and Wii U's lifespan ending in 2016-2017 is perfectly reasonable.
And it'd run the risk of them pulling a Sega if their new hardware tanks.
DS wasn't the primary handheld right away. GBA and DS coexisted for about two years before GBA was really phased out.
Right. So I did the pre-play surveys for the games I registered last week.
I now have 1080 coins. Not much really.
I'm 300 coins short of gold. If I had some more time, I could probably finish it (or if I'd done the post play surveys for some other games that I'm sure I didn't do them for).
I have to think wisely, as most of the stuff I want to get costs a bit, and I'll still have some coins left afterwards, but not enough to buy anything. I hate that.
I'm definitely going for the carrying case (400), and maybe a game (I don't know what game though, because the Wonderful101 costs 600, and that's almost all my other coins right there). Other games cost less, but no matter what, I'll likely have some coins left that I just can't get rid of, and it's annoying.
One Strip! One Strip!Get the game case, The Wonderful 101, and Grill-Off With Ultra Hand, if you haven't got that already. 400 + 600 + 80 = 1080. if you're spending 400 coins on one item, then you need to buy a 600 coin item and Grill Off With Ultra Hand. it's the only way.
I mean, you said A GAME. Not multiple.

Sounds good.
Guess I'll miss out on Earthbound though, but there are other ways.
......What's Grill Off with Ultra Hand?
One Strip! One Strip! It's a game made exclusively for Club Nintendo. It's cheap, mainly something to pick up and forget a few minutes later. Basically, you're grilling with one of Nintendo's old toys.
I finally gave in and went out and got a Toon Link Amiibo. Gamestop had Sheik amiibo's in stock but I'm really only interested in a select few.
So I heard Meme Run was pulled from the eShop.
That one piece of shovelware down, a good bunch more to go.
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your griefSpeaking of shovelware:
Why did the Wii get a lot of shovelware last gen?
Also, I'm hoping that Nintendo takes down all shovelware third party games...
You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life! The most popular system always gets the shovelware. Before the Wii and DS it was the PS2. Nowadays it's mobile. Shovelware goes where the easy money is.
And Steam has had a fuckton of shovelware in the past few years too, making the Greenlight program look like an utter joke.
Was it said why Meme Run was taken down?
Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order. No official reason, but allegedly it was for copyright violations.
Alright. I now have the codes for The Wonderful 101, and Grill Off With Ultra Hand, along with my incoming game case.
No coins left, but that's okay.
Will there be post play surveys for those ones as well?
One Strip! One Strip!
There hasn't really been any news on the SMT x FE crossover though, other than the fact that it's being delayed...which they said last summer.
"Thanks for the lesson. But I don't need you to tell me who I am."
