If you had to go to a past culture's clothes style, which culture would you choose?

I call colonial era. Those hats were just awesome.

Something where robes are used for formal attire. I'm getting really tired of suits and their bespoke restrictiveness.

Prehistoric bone jewellery, Renaissance-era Venetian facemasks and early 20th century European military officer uniforms - when trench coats were actually worn in trenches, or at least within a few miles of them.

The Roman Republic. Many aspects of that society I definitely do not like, but togas look awesome and reasonably practical. The one of the Imperial period also look good, but they seem more bulky and unpractical.

Plus, I'd love to live in a Crystal Spires and Togas future.

VIKING AGE

masculine and feminine wear, damnit.

This is too obvious.

Do you mean the authentic Viking style or the "horned helmets and unfeasibly heavy battle axes" one?

authentic, obviously. I wouldn't poke the latter with a 20 ft pole.

Yeah, something Germanic, probably. At least they already had trouserstongue

Ideally, I'd keep the current style, though!

Save for formal wear and dress shirts and stuff, the current style is a bit bland for my tastes.

That and I'm not a fan of what girls these days think is fashionable casual wear at all. Must be why I dress like a dude.

[up] You know what really needs to go back in style?

Cloaks.

That's a large part of what I meant, actually. Male and female attires are so similar these days, if not even the same - and when ever else in history was that the case?

I agree on cloaks, though!

Yeah, I was thinking that as during the winter I was cold and draped my blanket around myself, and I realized that blankets are actually warmer and more comfortable than sweaters. (I was most definitely not draping the cloak over one shoulder and holding it at the other and pretending to be a viking.)

So why not bring back cloaks? They're warm, comfortable and stylish!

@Anne: If you were in the Viking Age you (as a Pole) would probably be kidnapped as a wife.

But I'd go back to the 1920s.

The Wild West as in 1870s ad 1880s.

Which is funny because a lot of the garb from back then still hasn't died in places like Colorado.

18th century, which I think is what someone earlier meant by "colonial period". Hats and wigs, so plenty of options if, like me, you're starting to lose your hair. In fact, you had to have your hair cut pretty short to actually wear the wigs.

Also, rapiers.
