[up] The second one has a similar premise to one volume of The Sandman — and actually, at ComicCon several years ago I remember picking up a sample issue of a whole series that was either a spinoff of that or just had the same premise. So it's not unheard-of. Genre-wise it would probably be classed loosely as "speculative fiction"; whether it would then go under sci-fi or fantasy would depend largely on the flavor.

ETA: Hang on, there's even a trope for it: Inn Between the Worlds.

[up] It's inspired off of House Of Mystery, where I think one of the characters is from The Sandman.

My idea is like that except without the Continuity Creep and the Continuity Lockout—and with less sex and blood.

But my question is: Which idea will do better mainstream-wise?

The closest term I can find is an Anthology, although anthologies are usually created by multiple creators, and this will be a one-man affair.

[up] Ah, House Of Mystery was the spinoff series I was thinking of.

As for which one will do better, the first one seems like it might have more mass appeal, but it's a little generic and I personally find the second more interesting.
