The only really fitting picture I can think of is the classic evolution of man◊.
Yeah, it's definitely not an example.
I don't think the suggestion is any better.
The way I understand the trope, it is an example. The problem is people (Pokemon included) use "evolution" in the wrong way. This trope is about both the "proper" Evolutionary Levels(which is also bullshit) and the "technically incorrect" Evolutionary Levels. The image is the latter, but still example of the trope.

"Another popular form involves something evolving while still alive, on its own."
Aside from the "on it's own" (for the most part anyway), Pokemon is an example. Zapping the caption for being misleading.
Honestly, though, I'd prefer an example of Squirtle-Blastoise or Charmander-Charizard for more of a WTF Factor.

Y'all convinced me. I'd prefer the Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise pic, mainly because of the drastic differences between the three and because Blastoise was always one of my favorite Pokemon.
May I suggest a less eye-stabbing background color, though? Something like this◊.
This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish.Yeah, I'm cool with that one.
Fight smart, not fair.As stated, Pokemon isn't an example. Since "evolution" is just stages of growth or metamorphosis. More You Keep Using That Word. That and I like Bulbasaur better than Squirtle.
''Digimon actually does use evolutionary levels though. Observe◊, as part of their program is to "simulate" evolution.
Another popular form involves something evolving while still alive, on its own.
This makes Pokemon an example.
Do keep in mind I'm trying to repair this, I just suck at writing.
Fight smart, not fair.If it helps, you could rename the trope to Evolution In Name Only or something like that.
Except that Evolutionary Levels is a specific subset.
Fight smart, not fair. Before we go on, I wish to know what kind of evolutionary type we are looking at. Are we going forth based on Pokemon (Reaching a point of growth that allows the body to change), Digimon (Determining strength based on evolutionary tier and having a maximum amount of growth that is not necessarily close to the point of evolution), Real life (Adapting a better body system based on the environment over time), or what?
Until death do we partIt's normally none of those options. It's that evolution occurs in "stages" where you basically move from one to the other. In most cases, it's something like small ape-> larger ape-> hominid->modern human-> superhuman->energy being.
Fight smart, not fair. Why don't we use a picture of Caterpie, Metapod and Butterfree(or one of it's many variants)?
Or we can go with Pichu, Pikachu and Raichu to avoid the whole "I like this Pokemon better".
Technically, Caterpie-Butterfree actually happens in real life.
That is why I said that we could use that.
Using Deboss' description, shouldn't we go with one of the iconic dude walking pics◊? Or maybe a◊ parody◊?
First key to interpreting a work: Things mean things.I like the idea of monkeys, but I'd really like to see one where the step after human has superpowers.
Fight smart, not fair.I feel like I've seen a pic with a superhero before, but I'm not sure where...Xmen cover maybe?
First key to interpreting a work: Things mean things.I like that second one, but I dunno how well it would resize or crop for our use.
Screenshot + 2 minutes in GIMP = Wow, that was easy.
We could go bigger if we copied the "design" version, though we'd have to alter out the watermark (not difficult, really, the image is high-contrast)...

An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.
I don't know enough about Pokemon to judge, so brought it here.
