First thing's first: KEEP. THIS. SHIT. CIVIL. If you can't talk about race without resorting to childish insults and rude generalizations or getting angry at people who don't see it your way, leave the thread.

With that said, I bring you to what can hopefully be the general thread about race.

First, a few starter questions.

  • How, if at all, do you feel your race affects your everyday life?
  • Do you believe that white people (or whatever the majority race in your area is) receive privileges simply because of the color of their skin. How much?
    • Do you believe minorities are discriminated against for the same reason? How much?
  • Do you believe that assimilation of cultures is better than people trying to keep their own?
  • Affirmative Action. Yea, Nay? Why or why not?

Also, a personal question from me.

  • Why (in my experience, not trying to generalize) do white people often try to insist that they aren't white? I can't count the number of times I've heard "I'm not white, I'm 1/4th English, 1/4th German, 1/4th Scandinavian 1/8th Cherokee, and 1/8th Russian," as though 4 of 5 of those things aren't considered "white" by the masses. Is it because you have pride for your ancestry, or an attempt to try and differentiate yourself from all those "other" white people? Or something else altogether?

Does potential xenophobia count? If not, I guess you could count this story as me sharing some of my own prejudice being shaken.

I recently had an exchange with a Lyft driver (let's call him Travis), and it has quite possibly shaken some of my more stubborn prejudice. Travis seemed like an otherwise decent fellow, but while driving me to my destination, he aired his rather unflattering perspective on the refugee population. Firstly, Travis was under the impression that refugees in general take advantage of the Canadian system and are unemployed. Secondly, Travis believed that resources allocated to refugees should instead be allocated domestically, to people who, in his opinion, contribute more to society and need it more. Admittedly, I only responded by non-confrontationally mentioning that I knew refugees who lived productive lives. Upon further consideration after the fact, while I realize that there are resources that should likely be allocated domestically, I firstly don't think it's fair to paint all refugees as a monolith, and I secondly am under the impression that some refugees have tried to find employment only for there to be legal red tape preventing them from being employed and forcing them to rely on the government until the matter is resolved. What caught me off guard about this interaction was that I would expect a perspective like this from a redneck or a WASP, not a Documented Indian Immigrant.

Feels good, don't it?

This reminds me of a Maz Jobrani bit where he talks about how a Middle Eastern (?) taxi driver he had called Trump a "very good politic" (sic), citing his policy on immigration. When Jobrani brought up that the driver was an immigrant, the driver replied, "Yeah, but I'm here."

It's basic "fuck you, got mine" philosophy.

Which is a very poor philosophy even on purely pragmatic grounds, as it assumes “got mine” means it can’t be taken away. But so many don’t think that far ahead.

Some people in Japan still continue to diss her even if she’s a naturalized Japanese.

Regarding the discussion above, I have talked to a lot of Migrants (some here for several decades or already in the 2nd, 3rd Generation) who pride themselves as having come to the country the right way, not as undocumented, illegal aliens.

They are also proud to have worked themselves to the bone to eventually get to where they are, and detest the idea of more recent Migrants being entitled to social security.

[up]

It's not so much pulling up the ladder from what I'm getting but rather forcing everyone to climb up the ladder to not let the ladder lose its meaning.

It's a facet of the "Just-World" fallacy, those migrants want to believe that their hardship is what earned them their positions in society because accepting that the migrants coming now have a legitimate claim to what they have also means coming to terms with the idea that their society was far less tolerant when they came and they were worked to the bone because of said intolerance and not as a Secret Test of Character.

Needless to say, this is not easy to accept in general because no one likes to think that they were forced to take the L, if anything, that would be anger inducing because then they could think of all the other lost possibilities they could have had had society been more tolerant back then.

One of the people I spoke to literally said "If my parents back then had asked for entitlements, they would have been lynched!"

That's how far some of them have adopted this mindset. They don't see a statement like that as a testament of how intolerant society was back then, but as a badge of honour.

I think a lot of said people don’t understand how the process has changed and been made more difficult compared to when they/their ancestors went through it.

I saw a piece of paper taped to a road sign that said "diversity consignment" and I couldn't tell if it was supporting diversity or condemning it.

consignment
1 of 2
noun
con·sign·ment kən-ˈsīn-mənt
Synonyms of consignment
1 : the act or process of consigning
2 : something consigned especially in a single shipment

Sounds like whoever it was was just trying to sound smart, because I have no idea what "diversity consignment" is supposed to mean either.

Could it also be a flyer for a shop? There is a consignment shop in a few places where the name is Diversity Consignment. For those who don't know what a consignment shop is, it's a second hand retail place where people can take their items to a merchant that will sell for them and the merchant takes a percentage of the sales price.

Seems like Trump's trying to get the African-American community to vote him since he's indicted on several charges in court.

I'm LO Ling at this since he never said sorry for calling on the death penalty in the Central Park Five case.

[up] It wouldn't be too surprising. Trump did once say something to the effect of "The Jews are greedy, I'm greedy too, so we'll get along just fine!"

Admittedly worded more carefully, something to the effect of "They're a Proud Merchant Race and I'm the ultimate businessman", but that was the TLDR of it.

The talking point under the most generous of interpretations is that Black people would identify with Trump because they talk about being unfairly maligned by the justice and here is the current Republican frontrunner saying he's unfairly maligned by law enforcement.

Of course, that's completely BS, because he is as guilty as sin and should be held accountable for his crimes and also calling it a 2-tier system, he was treated with absolute kids gloves that no one actually being unfairly maligned by the justice system would have the opportunity. The denseness of that point of view is illustrated by him saying that if they can do this to him, they can do it to anyone, but they've already done it to others, he just took it too far that not even his power can insulate him from his crimes.

Though at least that is more eloquent than Black people enjoy criminals so Trump being arrested gives him street cred, or Trump is winning the Black vote because he has his own brand of sneakers.

That should be a punchline in something like Family Guy or The Simpsons, not something that somebody actually does IN REAL FUCKING LIFE without even an OUNCE of self-awareness!

Of course, had Trump actually had any self-awareness regarding anything in his entire life, we wouldn’t even be sitting here and discussing this at all.

Satire is dead. Reality is a farce.
