This thread is for discussing bowties, neckties and other marks of well-breeding among distinguished gentlemen / gentlewomen ;)

Personally, I tend to alternate between neckties and bowties more or less at random, favoring solidly colored ones.

When using a tie, I usually employ the full Windsor knot, but lately I have been thinking that at times it looks a little too stuffy — any suggestions?

EDIT: for reference, right now I look like this.

EDIT 2: Actually, right now I am trying to decide what to wear for a small talk. Here is a photo of me in bowtie and suit.

Which one looks better?

I'd go for the normal tie. The bow-tie looks too much with long hair, and to be honest I'm not a big fan of them unless there's a legitimate reason for not having a tie that dangles, as with doctors or snooker players. Your moustache is rather impressive!

Yeah, the moustache is the source of my powers (whatever they are tongue). And the mullet too, I suppose.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Necktie, with a jacket on occasion, but usually just with a long-sleeved shirt.

8-bit neckties for LAN parties.

It's too bad you can't really see much of the tie in this one.

O_o

Too much randomness to be properly contained in one photo.

You should possibly consider tieing your hair back. It will still be long but look a touch more professional.

I don't wear bowties myself, but I do agree with the Doctor's sentiment: "Bowties are cool!"

[up][up] Thanks, I will perhaps give it a try.

But in my chosen field, appearing a little eccentric is professional. If you look too sane, people will not take you seriously.*

A few months ago, I accumulated enough reasons/excuses to get a bow tie and got myself a nice black one. I got it ostensibly for a video project, but then, finding myself with a bow tie, I was reminded of why I hadn't gotten one before: "I don't think I'm the sort of person who wears bow ties."

I ultimately came to the conclusion that "I have a bow tie, I like bow ties, I will wear it and thus be that sort of person, and be happier for it."

Went with a black bow-tie for my Prom tux. I only own a couple of regular neck-ties though.

Not a fan of bowties, except with a tuxedo. Am a fan of long ties, and own many examples of varying levels of seriousness. My favorite is probably still my first, I think; it's tessellation of blue and red swans, originally designed by MC Escher.

I occasionally get a sadistic urge to give someone a jigsaw puzzle of an Escher drawing.

That would probably be only a minor challenge for my grandmother. Well, I think at this point she doesn't do puzzles much anymore. But some years ago she was doing huge puzzles and somebody in the family gave her an "Impuzzibles" puzzle, where the image repeats on a coarse and fine scale of detail, there is no border, and there are four extra pieces.

Took her less than two weeks.

Now, how did we get to puzzles from ties?

I also had to wear a bow tie while I was waitressing at a swanky country club.

It wouldn't have been so bad if tuxedo shirts fit women in a comfortable fashion. Also, I don't know how many times I had to bleach that fucking thing.

One of mine. I got three others. I prefer wearing clip-on bowties. I also have a number of regular neckties, though no picture of them.

At one stage I wanted a bow tie but looking up peoples opinions about them scarred me.

At the moment I have seven long ties I keep permanently tied for convenience. I know how to do a four-in-hand on an untied tie though.

My favorite is a medium sized navy tie with red and yellow continental stripes. My second favorite is either my plain red tie or my wide yellow tie with pale blue diamonds.
