    Original OP
(I saw Allan mention the lack of one so I thought I'd make one.)

Recent political stuff:

  • The vote to see if Britain should adopt Alternative Voting has failed.
  • Lib Dems lose lots of councils and councillors, whilst Labour make the majority of the gains in England.
  • The Scottish National Party do really well in the elections.

From what I see in that article and can get from two minutes of google, "officially unemployed" is the 4.5% that are out of work, could start a job within two weeks if they had one and have looked for work in the last 28 days. If you include people who haven't looked for work in the last month but say they would like a job it's somewhere between 10 and 11%, and if you include part-time workers (which can be zero-hour contracts, I think) who want full-time work it's 14%. Going from the stricter definitions of unemployment used back from 1945->1980ish where we were actually spending to more-or-less full employment we are about five million jobs short, plus or minus a bit depending on the makeup of those part-time workers contracts.

I see, and then adding in those who don't work and don't want to work, or can't work, brings us up to 21.5%...?

You’ve also probably got a small group of people who want part time employment (students, stay at home parents, ect...) but can’t find any.

Most unemployment numbers just cover the people actively looking for work though the established systems, so people on Jobseakers over here, in the US people on unemployment.

That doesn’t count people who can work but don’t qualify due to not being able to take any work (many disabled people can do jobs, just not any job), people who have given up finding work, people with jobs that aren’t full time, people who technically work for themselves for are basically employees without reliable income (gig jobs), people who want a job but are also doing something else that means they don’t claim (so retired people who’d like to work, many students, some stay at home parents).

Economically inactive people haven't sought work in the previous four weeks and/or aren't available to start work in the next two weeks. This includes students, people looking after homes/family, sick and disabled people (long-term or short-term), retired people, and discouraged workers.

The economically active group is made up of people who are employed and unemployed. Unemployed people have sought work in the previous four weeks and/or are available to begin work in the next two.

The 21% seems to be the economically inactive figure, which will exclude the unemployment figure.

Teenagers 'let down over degree choices'

What does the Office for Students say?

The Of S said it welcomed the report's "sharp focus on student opportunity, choice, quality and value for money", saying its job was to "protect and promote" students' interests.

I'm so glad you have figured this out, Mr Gyimah and company. Unfortunately you made two million people take on sixty grand of debt to try and make universities compete more in areas they were competing in already, so now a significant fraction of the younger generations hate you regardless.

At this stage I have absolutely no idea what this "meaningful vote" thing constitutes, since they're quibbling over minor adjustments to the wording and I am not a lawyer and lack the mental equipment to dissect it. Brexit: Theresa May wins 'meaningful vote' battle

Repeated claims at PM Qs by May that Labour wouldn't be able to spend on public services because they'd "bankrupt the country". Do you think she's just talking in economic monosyllables for the camera or does she actually not realize that Britain can't go bankrupt?

On the one hand, the idea that he's going to even be allowed to step foot here again, let alone be welcomed is abhorrent. On the other, the idea of the rotting orange being stuck in a room with a lady who can have him shot on the spot for even looking at her the wrong way is amusing.

Brexit: Three 'simple' questions for EU citizens to stay in UK

Prove who you are, if you live here and that you lackany serious criminal convictions, get settled status if you've been here five years and pre-settled status if you haven't. Much as I enjoy pillorying this government I see few problems with what little detail we know at the moment

The hope is that most applicants will not have to provide supporting documents because their answers will be checked against government databases - such as HM Revenue and Customs and the Department for Work and Pensions - as the system will be linked with those records.

But applicants without smartphones will have to send their passports in to the Home Office to verify their identity.

Applicants with Android phones will be able to download an app which can read the chip in their passport to verify their identity - and they will be able to take a "selfie" that can be checked against Home Office records, said Mr Javid.

But he said there was an "an issue at the moment" with Apple device users, who will not be able to make use of this app, and instead will have to send in their passport to prove their identity.

The home secretary said he had raised the issue with Apple on a recent visit to Silicon Valley and the company was "looking at it actively".

Potential for a bit of a bureaucratic snafu there, but not the worst plan I've ever heard.

BBC: Airbus warns no-deal Brexit could see it leave UK

Airbus has warned it could leave the UK if the country exits the European Union single market and customs union without a transition deal.

The European planemaker said the warning was not part of "project fear, but its "dawning reality".

Airbus employs about 14,000 people at 25 different sites in the UK.

Last week, the outgoing president of the CBI said sections of UK industry faced extinction unless the UK stayed in the EU customs union.

It brings together the EU's 28 members in a duty-free area, with a common import tariff for non-EU goods.

Prime Minister Theresa May has ruled out staying in the customs union. The UK is due to leave the EU on 29 March 2019.
