The trope is woefully underused one line covers something that should be huge

Should actually list the Ecchi Animes that do this and said Ecchi animes are getting listed on Better on DVD. Also expanding the description a bit would be a big help and also to include that this is most of the time a marketing ploy to sell DV Ds (at least for animes)

However my attempt at listing them are mostly X Just X (All the ones I know for a fact.) should I make a stub in YKTTW to expand on it? or make a quick thread in the anime forum?

Also the Too Hot for TV was also used for just Straight To DVD releases like Girls Gone Wild and such which is not this trope.

Highschool Of The Dead had a bath scene were Censor Steam was present during the televised version but featured nipples in the DVD variant.

Is this really anime specific?

The thing is being very underrepresented, and Raso, as an anime fan, noticed it.

Quick guidline for things that are Anime specific: if it is not something that is strictly Japanese, or Japanese symbolism, such as That Thing That Goes Doink or Cherry Blossoms respectively, it's not Anime specific. Visualization and medium tropes can be used by anyone.

Of course, but there are tropes that aren't, in theory, anime/Japan specific, but get used by them far, far more often. Just as there are tropes that very rarely show up in Anime, but show up all the time in Western works.

[up][up]What does this have to do with this trope, anyway? No one never claimed it was anime specific.

Someone saw "anime" and it apparently hit their "BLARGH ITS NOT ANIME SPECIFIC" trauma button. Or something.

Post 4 was asking if this was really anime specific. Fortunately, Post 5 pointed this out and mentioned that it's not restricted that way. Unfortunately, I wrote my post after post 4, but before post 5. Since the idea came up, I wanted to point out that you don't write something as medium specific unless you can give a really good reason why it's restricted to that medium. "It shows up in Anime a lot more than Western stuff" does not make it medium specific.

[up]It just gives it a place on the (Medium) Tropes index.

WTF I never said this was "Anime only" my problems are this

  • Underrepresented in general the fact that ecchi animes get one line and wicks dont exist means that most dont even know this trope exists. I was asking about where to best build that list since my known list is rather small and mostly X Just X.
  • Expand the description to include the fact that this is quite often a marketing ploy (at least it is for animes)
  • The name was also used for straight to DVD releases that never would of made it on TV even censored which is not this trope.

I don't really see much reason to not just list the titles where this happens, since it tends to be a pervasive change throughout the show, listing individual scenes from the work seems pointless.

[up][up]Yes, but one might get that impression from the fact that your examples were exclusively anime in nature.

At any rate, let's move on before the Forever War can heat up again.

Edit: [up]True, but you could, however, describe some details of what the changes were in general.

Thats because he's specifically discussing the anime section, how is this a hard concept?

[up]I didn't get that impression. The fact that his examples were all from the anime section simply means that he is likely an anime fan. I was simply speculating on where the concern that this trope was written as anime-exclusive when it isn't (which has been a problem in the past) might have come from.

Again, though, the issue is settled: the trope is not anime-exclusive and no one is claiming that it is or was written as if it was. Can we move on to discussing the real problems with this trope?

Problems with the trope:

Anime section, probably the theoretically largest section, heavily under-represented. Fairly easily fixed

Examples being included that were never aired on TV, in several sections

Confusion with several other tropes, as Raso mentioned.

Just want to note that Family Guy's censored eps and other series are also on Better on DVD. Most of those are already on Too Hot for TV so I didnt bring it up.

Good point. Frequently a show will be both Too Hot for TV and Better on DVD, and should be listed on both. But the simple removal of censor steam/light/darkness should not count as Better on DVD unless there was notable redrawing in the process.

The Better on DVD trope is "Archive binge enhances the enjoyment of the series".

Well the simple answer is to copy or move a lot of the examples from Better on DVD and to also put this trope on those work pages.

I really want to rename Better on DVD right now man everyone is mixing that up constantly and in no way is it DVD specific as manga's have it too... Archive Binge Enhances The Series is probably too long lol.

So no ideas on how to get more examples for this? or elaborate on any?

Should we sandbox a new writeup adding its possible that DVD sales are a possible reason for the censorship and later removal?

Thoughts on if we should rename?
