I think Meg is an okay character, but the other characters need to stop being so harsh with her.

Depends on the person, I suppose. Family Guy's jokes are way funnier when they're not dark.

I thought everyone could appreciate dark humor? What on Earth is better to joke about than things that horrify and depress us?

I don't think I've seen a cartoon dark ENOUGH to completely satisfy me.

Family Guy was good in it's early days where the focus was it's wacky random humor instead of shock value and there's was at least some consistancy in the characters to make it worth more than an animated sketch show (which I'm surprised Seth hasn't just made already). However it slowly got more vulgar and the humor became mean spirited. This was watchable at earlier points where it was still balanced by the sheer wackiness of it all, but as of recently they've diluted even that, rather than having a gag with an offensive subject matter, the offensive element IS the gag. It's rarely that funny anymore and often rather painful to watch.

The show has went from slapstick to sadistic slapstick to just plain sadism.

Meh, I remember even the first season selling itself on the shock humor, but I think it was more tolerable at the time just because the show was new.

It had adult humor from the beginning yes, but it didn't REVOLVE around it. If it made a funny gag or assisted in one then it was used, but it wasn't offensive for the sake of it back then. Most of the show's best jokes aren't even very explicit (though I could say the same about South Park a lot of times, Professor Chaos for example).

On the comparison to The Simpsons: it was never intended to copy it. In fact, Peter is based off of Ralph Kramden from The Honeymooners and the original shorts (where Peter is named Larry and is shorter and thinner) are nothing like The Simpsons (they also show that Mac Farlane can in fact draw).
It may have initially not been based on The Simpsons, but many of the ideas used in the show since are evidently based on it.

I think Family Guy's an okay show, not terrible, but not usually that great (but it does have its moments). Generally I watch it when nothing else's on.

The Star Wars spoofs were great, though.

Trying to justify character bashing and making half the episode for a terrible status quo that justifies characters horrible behavior and completely destroys any hope of actual character growth is just plain horrible.

I just saw a commercial for Family Guy.

Are they seriously reusing Rock Lobster?

[up] Sorry to butt in with this statement: But that's what happens when your show deserves nothing but hate - especially for hiding behind the First Amendment, like a certain reviewer pointed out at the time.

I just wonder how much everyone will celebrate once it's cancelled or ended (I prefer cnacelled)...

Pointing out flaws in a show, writing, and how we feel should not be considered a hate thread. Even if is a hate thread. I'm sorry, I lost my train of thought.

[up]It's Fox whose needs the face-slap. HARD.

But the Hack that is Mc Farlane, which he is for letting Family and it's two brothers/sisters go on for too long just to line his pockets, anyway, needs one, regardless!

Just because you're tired of doing something doesn't excuse sucking on purpose at it!

From what I've seen of American Dad, it hasn't suffered quite as bad as Family Guy, it's at least still very funny at times and hasn't been diluted to raw gross out and shock value "comedy" just yet (though I haven't seen any of the new season). The Cleveland Show is hard to say, it doesn't really have the quality either shows originally had but I do at least laugh at it on occasion, Family Guy is just painful to watch right now.
