Um I think some people (Thorn14, sorry to point you out in particular), don't realise is that Fanservice has been around for a a LONG time now. Hell, the originator of it not only made the First Real mecha show (Mazinger Z), But also made fanservice popular with Cutey Honey and other shows, like Devilman, which has the insanely lesbian fanservice esque spin off Devilman Lady.
Watch SymphogearI also just read the plot summary for Manyuu Hikenchou.
It actually sounds interesting, ala similar to some of Go Nagai's more obscure works. And its tame compared to some of them. One of his works is about a school where every teacher is an aboslute perverted freak, the main female character wears nothing but a mask and protects the students from them, and the main prinicpal antagonist is a parody of Super Sentai.
Seriously, Manyuu Hikenchou is nothing compared to some of the weirder works Go Nagai has made.

Watch SymphogearYes, Manyuu Hikenchou sounds like a fun piece of concentrated fanservice. Except that watching screen filled with white glow is neither fun nor titillating.
And that series you described - Kekko Kamen?
Yep, thats the one.
Watch SymphogearI'm aware of Fanservice and its long history, including the Perverted Uncle Go Nagai.
Doesn't mean I have to like it. Having little moments in it from time to time is tolerable at best, but having an ENTIRE SHOW about fanservice? No thanks.
I couldn't finish Godannar, a normally good Mecha with Obari designs (which are awesome) because of the fanservice.

You can just ignore it. Fanservice is about 10% of what's airing
I loved Godanner for it. It did it well and Deconstructed the Tsundere Archetype wonderfully. And I love Fanservice, because I love boobs, and I love chicks, so, yeah.
I'm sorry but to honest, people that complain about over the top fanservice should just get over it, admit that it exists, will always exist, and won't stop existing until humanity dies out.
Speaking of which, my favorites for Summer 2011 are....
And, well, thats it. Haven't tried most other series, Though I know they are good.

Watch SymphogearI'm completely and well aware fanservice is gonna be around forever. I'm just making the point that I'm generally not interested in any show with fanservice. I'm not trying to make a big stink over it, not even sure how this conversation started.
edited 12th Jul '11 4:11:35 PM by Thorn14
Because you were making a big stink over it.
Freezing's manga is actually very complex and the fanservice isn't quite so blatant.
I love it.
Same with Wolf Guy Wolfen Crest, which I think needs a fully uncensored anime adaption. Maybe next year or winter.

Watch SymphogearWhat kind of show doesen't have ANY fanservice?
I can kind of see not wanting primarily fanservice-based shows (God knows I'm tired of it) but none whatsoever?
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntFor certain genres, I think the more Fanservice, the better.
Actually, well detailed and up close shots of certain Humongous Mecha is stated to be a Non Sexual Type of Fanservice. Same with flashy over the top moves. Without fanservice, Humongous Mecha wouldn't of gotten off the ground to start with.

Watch Symphogear
All I saw was people showing the anime and it was nothing but fanservice ecchi. Maybe the manga is better.
Daiguard has no real fanservice. And I'm aware most shows have them (not sure why.) Even Votoms has parts where we see nude women. I just roll my eyes and wait for it to pass.
When I mention Fanservice, I generally mean of the nude flesh variety. I know the term means more, but its generally used for that purpose.
edited 12th Jul '11 4:17:37 PM by Thorn14
^ why is there fanservice? Because its actually even older than most Anime and Manga has ever existed.
Watch SymphogearMaybe thinking I'm above fanservice makes me elitist, but its just how I feel. I dont see why a show needs it, other than to appeal to genitals.
I'm gonna drop this topic unless someone makes a thread about it, I feel I've derailed this thread enough, and for that I'm sorry.

I concur.
To: the fanboys and girls of Tvtropes
About: Summer 2011 and your opinion Content: Now that we have 2-3 episodes of each, half of the plot exposed and praises and rage blasted left and right I want your opinion by rating the season's first impression, on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest.
...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura ChifuyuRating indivual shows, or the season itself?
Whole season. First impression.
...a little brother should belong to his older sister, right? - Orimura Chifuyu3, I guess.

Since I'm only watching 3 4 shows, I can't make a blanket generalization, so I may as well do this individually:
- Bunny Drop: Fucking 5/5.
- Ikoku Meiro No Croisee: It's a niche thing. It excels at combining Aria with Rule of Cute. I love it, but it's not for everyone. 4/5
- Mayo Chiki: Oh boy. If there's a show that "not for everyone" can be applied to, this one takes the cake and eats it. 3/5, because I'm not expecting much.
- Ro-Kyu-Bu: 2/5, but it could get better, I guess.

Imoutos are the best! Follow at your own risk. Tumblr.3/5. There's a couple of very good shows (Mawaru Penguindrum, Bunny Drop), but after that it's a big step down, and there are many shows that range from the very disappointing (Blood C *sigh*) to the unwatchable (Manyuu Hikenchou).
More than half of the shows I really look forward to on a weekly basis are leftovers from the Spring season (Steins Gate, Tiger And Bunny, Hanasaku Iroha), which probably says something.

Steins Gate, Hanasaku Iroha, and Nichijou over here.
Imoutos are the best! Follow at your own risk. Tumblr.No6 and Mawaru Penguindrum are both good as well, but nothing else has given me the impression that I'd be missing out on anything if I stopped watching them.
It's impossibly hard to give something an accurate number rating...
Especially with so many animes to compare them with, instead, I'll judge this season's animes in the context of this season only. Assuming other animes outside of summer 2011 never existed, so I'll only compare the anime of this season with each other. And more importantly, only the anime I watched so far...
That said.....
- 5/5
- Baka To Test To Shoukanjuu - self-explanatory...unfortunately the ED theme song is no where near as good as the first season's
- Nurarihyon No Mago* - I liked the first season. And this season is so far even BETTER than the first.
- Usagi Drop? - maybe...or 4/5. Hard to decide. I hope next season will animated the second half of the manga.
- Sacred Seven? - great action, hoping the pace keeps up
- Rou Kyuu Bu! - lolis!!! Hina!!
- 4/5
- Mayo Chiki - Reverse Trap ecchi series. The Reverse Trap is kinda likable too. The abusive mother and sister is really entertaining in the few scenes they exist. Just lacks the little boost needed to bump is to 5/5
- Mararu Penguin Drum? - still too early to give it a fair rating. Should this be in 5/5? I don't know, far too early to decide, and I still don't know what to make of this show...except really fun to watch.
- Yuru Yuri - Himawari and Sakurako, and Kyouko are entertaining. Kinda reminds me of K On!
- 3/5
- Dantalian No Shoka - I really do not like the male protagonist. Luckily Dalian makes up for it. As well as the neat ED. The dragon and that knife nut looks was cool. And I like the fact that this reminds me a bit of Castlevania's atmosphere. But so far, nothing too special. It's only been 1 episode of course.
- Kamisama Dolls - I keep forgetting about this series, and thus only watched the first episode. So judging purely from the 1st episode...3/5. I'll watch it later.
- Itsuka Tenma No Kuro Usagi? - horribly timed subtitles and poor video quality REALLY hurts this. That said, I enjoyed this quite a bit, and hoping this would be the new Ichiban Ushiro No Dai Maou. Either a 3/5 or a 4/5.
- 2/5
- Kamisama No Memo Chou - if they made this show only about Alice and the men in that dojo, this could easily have been a 4/5 or 5/5. Also, the show is a bit too slow paced atm.
- R15 - I like the math guy, and the camera lady. And it has a sense of humor(especially the narrator in the beginning). Censors REALLY get in the way. Will judge again once they're removed.
- 0/5
- Blade - ...this was a no brainer. It's another Marvel Anime made by Mad House, easily the worst of the 4. Blade looks ugly as hell. And they even failed at making the female lead remotely decent lookiing. The fight scenes are nothing special. And it has typical Marvel Anime quality all over it. More importantly, why isn't there any opening theme song?!?
Note: All scores are subject to change...considering every show is so early in. At first I thought there's FAR too many 5/5 and 4/5's...but then I remembered I'm only judging the animes this season only with other anime's this season. This is less a ratings and more a ranking.
Shows I haven't watched enough to judge yet, I didn't finish the 1st episode of that reverse Gosick. I'll...watch it later. Blood C. And The Idol Master. I plan on watching these when I have time. Idol Master is apparently doing better than expected.
