Guess the news has been slow lately.

20 years is to generate news. Not that it's not going to happen (it most likely will), but fraud doesn't land you 20 years.

Again, as others have said, business as usual from richer people taking out their frustrations disproportionately on those less fortunate.

[up] Time to get out. [lol]

...

She only wanted them to get a better education. She risked punishment for that to happen.

Sure, but no one sees fraud as a 20 year punishment. Fraud's a crime, and she knew she was committing it, but 20 years? Give me a break.

@Newfable: Actually, I'm not entirely sure that she knew it was fraud, since she was staying at the address she gave for a brief period of time. It just wasn't her permanent address, because she had no permanent address.

Actually, this raises the very good question of how situations like this (homeless or transient parents registering schoolchildren) should be handled.

Am I invisible? I'm here, it's having a direct effect on people I know. It's my tax money being spent.

I'm giving you info not in the media.

I'll be driving past the courthouse tomorrow for chrissake!

The lady who got evicted lived in one of the two major housing projects in town. We're not the poorest city around but we've got a large population. A lot of affluence here too, but the majority of folks aren't rich. I know a lot of people who got into top tier schools but have been forced into U Conn for financial reasons.

This isn't the rich taking out their frustrations on the poor, or at least not the case itself. This is a foolish attempt to make an example out of a criminal who had good intentions but went about them entirely the wrong way.

And you know what? If she weren't black and hit with the same charges this wouldn't be major news. Nobody outside of Norwalk cared until the NAACP became involved.

Which tells me injustice happens when people can't stand together.

(Old topic, lol)

I personally think that people should be able to send their kids to whatever schools they can, and that the schools that don't get a lot of people wanting to go there aren't getting many FOR A REASON, but that's just my two cents.

Sure, she should have been punished, but 20 years? What? There have been rapists and murderers who have gotten way less time than that! Ridiculous.

How about I charge right up to that revolting Jack character in charge of that school insinuating that she somehow stole services and kick him in the nads repeatedly?

This is just another revolting instance of how the rich are getting their way in America.

For god's sakes it's kindergarten, that's like a glorified Daycare service anyways. Jegus.
