The thing I wanna rename is A Worldwide Punomenon, which hardly makes sense in name too. How can a pun resonate on a global scale?

My suggestion for the name is Pun Bun, which is exactly what it sounds like, Genius Bonus wise. The namesake is as abundant as buns on a lifetime scale, and the naming rings true to its nature: a visibly / audibly delivered pun. This name is more portable and easy to Pot Hole with

Please decide whether you want to edit your OP to be about the trope you're actually talking about from the start, or whether you want this locked up.

I want this to go on of course, so change the OP for me, thanks. I can't edit the title using Edit function

Changed. However, "I don't like the name" isn't sufficient reason to change a trope name. You need to make a case that it's not working, is misused, is confusing or unclear, or is otherwise broken. It's got 748 wicks and 423 inbound links. You're going to need solid evidence that it's broken badly.

So.... what's bad about changing the name of a trope being used so much? Cumbersome?

Anyway, during my (perhaps limited) time of reading this site, I seriously haven't found much AWWP in the lists of works' trope examples. What's being potholed more often is ILP (incredibly lame pun), but at one point, potholers never cared whether or not it's in-story characters that's feeling lame, ever

ILP, in purpose, would be better off become replaced by Collective Groan (I feel), but that would be another problematic work too. As I said, Pun Bun would be portable for others to pot hole with

It breaks inbounds, which is bad. We try to keep renames to things that will improve the article. Pun Bun makes no sense, what the hell is the Bun part about?

Go to A Worldwide Punomenon. Click on the "related to" button at the top of the page. That will give you a list of all 700+ pages that it's used on.

Renaming without keeping the old name as a redirect means that all of those links have to be changed. It means that all the sites elsewhere on the web that have included a link to the page will now point nowhere — at best they'll send anyone who clicks the link to the wiki Home page, at worst it will throw up a"404 Page Not Found" error.

Keeping the old name as a redirect doesn't do those things, but unless all of the wicks are changed, people are going to keep using the old name because that's the one they see on other pages.

And finally, "Not liking"a name isn't a good reason to change it. The wiki is a catalogue; it needs to be functional and relatively stable, and changing trope names on the grounds of "I thought of one I like better" makes it extremely unstable; trope names will be changed all over the place, because there's at least one person who "doesn't like it" for every name we use. I'd bet money on it.

As to your statement that no individual pun is worldwide, trope names don't have to be literally correct; they need to be clear. And puns are a worldwide phenomenon; they can (and are) made in virtually every language spoken (and quite a few dead languages).

Although this is supposed to be puns for the sake of it, than puns all over the world.

Exactly. What meaning is there when a pun is made during-work, that viewers can understand but doesn't take place worldwide? It's extremely illogical to name the trope as it currently is, because how can you be sure at at 50% of the world watches the same show at the same time, feeling the same pun?

It was never meant to even imply being worldwide. It was a self demonstrating title, or an attempt at one. It's honestly just a title that indicates it's about puns, but doesn't indicate that it's one of the "Makes Everything Better" tropes.

My understanding of the title is that it refers to the fact that everyone makes puns - puns are a worldwide phenomenon, as it were. It doesn't necessarily mean "puns that translate everywhere".

We should change it into something catchy, because most tropers like how Incredibly Lame Pun reads in comparison to A Worldwide Punomenon (so they would take the path of least resistance and use it for general puns, even when it's an In-Universe trope). Perhaps it should just be Pun, for convenience's sake.

I meant as the actual title, since people remember and use the title more often. Or we should just try and make a better title.

A Worldwide Punomenon has about 3.5 times as many wicks as Pun, so people actually use it less often.

[up]I meant "any" title. The title is almost always used more often, and if it's catchy or easy to remember (and more importantly, type), tropers would be more likely to use it. And if Pun is used more often, it'll probably over take Incredibly Lame Pun as the Go-To Pot Hole for an actual pun.

"Pun" is too short, though. Not as impactful. Also, it sounds like a trope for any pun, which is People Sit On Chairs.

It is an Everything's Better With trope, and Everythings Better With Puns sounds catchy enough to me, but A Worldwide Punomenon probably sounded catchy at the time too. Instead, it just doesn't make any sense.

I'm tempted to just bolt all the stupid potholes to both tropes and rename Incredibly Lame Pun to Groan Worthy Pun before the meme has a chance to come back.

I'm still suggesting Pun Bun. Sounds reasonable and witty enough that's not as short as Pun, and not as long-winded as AWWP

It is broken. Pretty much all potholes to Incredibly Lame Pun should go to this, if I understand correctly.

EDIT: Now whether a rename will help, I don't know.

Pun Bun sounds like a trope about rhyming puns or rhymes in general more than a trope about puns. It's a horrid name, and far too misleading. It's not witty. It's not catchy. I'm not sure what the point of that name is.

Didn't we vote it in an earlier crowner to have Incredibly Lame Pun as the generic pothole for puns?

I remember, that I added that option and it was leading when I last looked at it, but I ca't find the thread.
