I always get this guy confused with the Academy Award winning writer of Precious (Geoffrey Fletcher).

I need to read The Canterbury Tales at some point...

Eh, Decameron was meh, to be perfectly honest. Although I haven't read the Canterbury Tales, so I can really say anything about it, either.
It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.

I think he only really inspired Shakespeare by virtue of standardizing the language he wrote in.
Chaucer's a person.

THE man.
This guy arguably single-handedly saved the english language. Raise your hand if you were ever singularly responsible for the survival of any language, let alone one of the biggest and most widespread. Yeah. I thought so.
Also, he died as the clark/clerk of Westminster Abbey, which appears boring, but it actually means that he was a very intelligent legal, luiinguistic, and philisophical writer who was good at his work for him to get such a prestigious post. Also, because he was the clark there, he was buried there, and because his works were so awesome that they inspired Shakespeare, Marlowe, Jonson, and many other great authors, tons of great english authors are buried in Westminster Abbey, because Chaucer, by dying, started a tradition.
Raise your hand if you ever died and started a tradition that included Rudyard Kipling, Jane Austen, The Bronte Sisters, and more. Yeah. I thought so.
