This sort of spawned off from the Lion King 1 1/2 conversation we had.

We all know Disney has had some pretty terrible direct to video sequels, but what are the best (and worst) ones?

I liked the ones for Aladdin. Turns out Aladdin was a prince all the time!

I maintain that the best is Lion King 2.

Okay, maybe it's not the best, but it's my favorite. Forgive me some bias this one time.

I liked the Lion King 2, actually. If only for this:

I remember liking the Little Mermaid sequel and prequel, but its been a long time since I watched those two. I would say the worst sequel aside from the aladdin movies are the Cinderella ones.

I find Bambi II to be pretty enjoyable. Yes, it's a very different—very different—work than that which... inspired it, but it's not too bad on its own.

Even though it sounds childish, IMO the best Disney Direct To Video sequel will always be "Pooh's Grand Adventure". It has one of the best plots out of any Pooh or Disney film and one song in particular has one of the highest counts in our Disney Tear Jerker entry.

Worst for me is probably a tie between Mulan II or The Fox And The Hound II

Aladdin had some good ones as did The Lion King. Mulan 2 was ok. The worst? The Cinderella and Beauty and the Beast ones. Just. No. I do like Enchanted Christmas's gay organ villain though because he's a gay organ.

I actually see quite a few people express affection for the Cinderella sequels. Mostly for woobieifying her ugly stepsisters and doing some Alternate Character Interpretation that casts them as victims of their circumstances.

I think it's generally accepted that Aladdin and the King of Thieves is the best DTV, largely because it manages to tell a story that stood on its own terms instead of being "Hey, remember that movie you liked? Here's a rehash!" Robin Williams return certainly helped as well.

I liked Lion King 0.5 best. Second place I would give to Kronk's (It was entertaining, but it is probably mostly because I liked The emperor's new school.) Third place? Well, I can't even remember any other such sequels. I must have erased them from my brain.

I don't even remember watching the Aladdin one. It may be because I didn't really care for the original movie either for some reason.

I've always had a soft spot for Return of Jafar. Partly because it serves as a direct continuation, and partly because it lead into the Aladdin series which I have very fond memories of.

I haven't watched most Disney DTV movies, but I do remember particularly liking The Lion King 1 1/2. I've seen the original since then, and want to re-watch 1 1/2 and see if it's still any good to me (as I am a sucker for self-aware/referential humor; for reference I first saw 1 1/2 at 9 and the original at 12).

For "fun" I watched a bunch of them, y'know, the ones made right after 2000, a while ago - if I ever start my own online review show (hey, don't look at me like that, it could happen), I'm totally doing those...

Of those... Mulan 2 was decent and Peter Pan 2 - much to my irritation - was actually good. Man, I hate that kid.

The best of Disney's DTV sequels is probably Lion King 2. Great movie. Gotta love Return of Jafar and Prince Of Thieves, too.

Wasn't The Rescuers Down Under also DTV?

The Rescuers Down Under played theatrically and had a budget comparable to The Little Mermaid. Sadly, it opened the same day as Home Alone and died at the box office (by the time it hit video, Home Alone was still playing in first-run).

Yeah, it was theatrical. That's also one of the reasons I limited it to DTV sequels, since their theatrical releases (Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, WinnieThePooh) tend to be much better than their home releases.

The ones I thought were good:

  • Return to Neverland
  • Lilo And Stitch 2
  • Bambi 2
  • Aladdin and the King of Thieves

The rest I either didn't like or didn't see.

Oh yeah, if you ignore "DTV" and include The Rescuers Down Under it hits the top of the list by far.

Best

  • Lion King Sequels
  • Aladdin Sequels
  • Lilo And Stitch 2: Stitch gets a Glitch
  • Bambi II
  • Poohs Grand Adventure
  • Lady and the Tramp II

Worst.

  • Beauty and the Beast sequels.
  • Brother Bear II
  • Fox and the Hound II
  • Return to Neverland
  • Little Mermaid II

Best Disney Sequel? The Rescuers Down Under wins by leaps and bounds, mainly because it's better that the original movie.

"Return of Jafar" solely based on the fact that he finally gets his own song.

I admit to forgetting about Grand Adventure, but it seems to occupy a different space in my mind from the other movies. I think because I watched "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" a lot as a kid, so in my mind, I tend to associate it more with the TV show.

If we are counting Disney/Pixar movies as legitimate Disney, then I'd definitely lump the "Toy Story" movies 2 and 3 with the best. If we are not counting Disney/Pixar (justifyingly so), then I have to say that "The Lion King 2" is definitely better than most. The Beauty and the Beast sequel disappointed me a bit when I watched it the second time (I fell asleep the first time—I was six years old and sleepy!).
