I brought this up before when it was named "You Fail Basic Training Forever". The name is not indicative.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I support the artistic license change, but it was not without leaving behind a little mess.
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianThe problem is "basic training" in the name.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Artistic License Military Training?
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova ScotianIt's not just about training though. It's the military in general. So Artistic Licence – Military.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. Dick^ I like that title, provided we fix the spelling error ;)
There's no spelling error. Just Britishisms.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIt's not even as general as artistic license. It's about military acting far too casual for how they act in real life, even thinking this is a party.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid. No, that makes it seem like "Casual Friday" dress. This is about attitude and behavior.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.Just an FYI (because the Artistic Licence renames make it irrelevant), at least in the US, even though there are other types of "basic training" (although the use of that exact phrase seems to be uncommon), the phrase is heavily associated with the military.
You know what is even more associated with the military? The word "military" :)
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Well the word basic is also a point to that these fail at basic military knowledge which everyone in Basic Training should know.
The You Fail At Basic Training Forever did sound better than the current one but creativity in the name is not always a bad thing.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!"pertains to depictions of the military in film and television" is in the first sentence of the description, which is far more general than the name suggests.
Looking at the description again, this would better be called Hollywood Military.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.I think the previous name was actually clearer than the present one. I'm not American and I've never been in the armed forces, but the phrase "basic training" makes me think of the military immediately, and the idea of failing it fits in with a whole family of related tropes.
However, I agree Hollywood Military is closer to what the trope is about - examples of military behaviour that you get in media but not in real life. And basic training isn't an academic subject, so the idea of failing it forever is pushing the concept too far just to make the trope name fit in.
"Well, it's a lifestyle"So this is about Mildly Military being applied to actual militaries, eh? Just making sure we don't have a duplicate trope floating around.
Don't take life too seriously. It's only a temporary situation.Just say "boot camp" if the civvies are too confused about it.
Was Jack Mackerel. | i rite gudFurther to my above post, I have since realised that, of course, the names of all the "You Fail..." tropes have been changed in the same way as this one's and that the discussion provoked some controversy. Please ignore the bit about the old trope name being better. I don't want to re-open old wounds. Apologies, everyone.
"Well, it's a lifestyle"It's not about boot camp. We aren't confused by the name. It's just inaccurate.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickI like Hollywood Military.
Put me in motion, drink the potion, use the lotion, drain the ocean, cause commotion, fake devotion, entertain a notion, be Nova Scotian"Basic Training" is a phrase strictly associated with the military. If you mean basic or elementary training in, well, anything else, you say "basic training in X" or "introductory training in X" or "X 101" or "introduction to X". If you say "Basic Training" and nothing else, you are talking about the military. "Boot camp" is a synonym.
There is no need to rename that part of the trope. What we need to do is reverse the awful, awful name change to "Artistic License—X" that renamed all the "You Fail X Forever" tropes.
Well, I started a thread about the very unfortunate rename of You Fail X Forever to "Artistic License X" and it was summarily locked. If anybody else reading this thread is unenthusiastic about this name change, let's hear from you!
You're getting it wrong. "basic training" isn't bad because it's limited to military. It's bad because the trope isn't limited to basic training.
I'm on the internet. My arguments are invalid.
Crown Description:
I came across this through the other "artistic license" tropes. I believe the name is unclear: basic training, yes, but of what? Basic chemistry lab procedures? Basic computer tech support? Basic sales negotiation techniques? All of the above?
Turns out it's about the army, but I can't guess that from the title. While the army surely has a class called "basic training", so do many other fields. I'd suggest renaming to Artistic License Army or Artistic License Armed Forces or something similar.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!
