OK, the setting is a post-apocalyptic world where vampires are overpopulated and driving humanity to extinction. Perr and Kavin, the protagonists, are two teenage human boys, but Perr is a very weak necromancer whose sole ability is that he can resurrect himself if it's been at least a week since he last died.

Anyway, I want to have Kavin seek out a fight with this one foe, who they will realize is basically an extra-powerful variety of vampire. I want it to be personal. But I can't figure out how to do it.

Incidentally, regarding the apocalypse and how it happened: vampires had been getting overpopulated gradually for awhile. The necromancers, since they have a Compelling Voice power over undead, gathered the vampires into concentration camps to keep them under control. However, a couple vampires figured out a spell to counter the Compelling Voice, and staged a rebellion. The necromancers were slaughtered, and the vampires got loose. For awhile, they revelled in their new freedom - then they realized there weren't enough humans to go around.

Perhaps this vampire tried to prey on one of Kavin's friends or loved ones. That's what I can think up off the top of my head.

It would help to tell us something about Kavin. Did he know the Big Bad before he was turned into a vampire? Is there some quality about the villain Kavin hates, either in life or unlife? What sets the villain apart from the other vampires, and does that have anything to do with Kavin's vendetta? Did Kavin contribute in any way to the villain's success?

Under World. It rocks!

^ Those questions are precisely what I'm stuck on.

How does this sound:

The vampire nemesis kidnapped Kavin's family (mother, father and little sister). For a long time he thought they were dead and wanted to avenge them, then he discovers that this vampire has been holding them prisoner in a human 'breeding camp', along with many others. He vows to free them. In the climax of the story, though, he ends up realizing that this vampire is actually trying to save humanity from extinction, and though his methods were morally questionable, they're also most likely necessary. Kavin is then forced to take this guy's place as leader of the breeding camp, and struggles to protect the people from the rampaging vampire hordes.
