In Empire Strike Back Vader and Palpatine seemed to know who Luke was. How did that come about exactly? Did Vader even know that Luke was the particular Rebel that blew up the Death Star?

Vader learns who Luke is between IV & V, as shown in the Darth Vader comic. Knowledge that Luke blew up the Death Star included.

Sheev finds out on his own elsewhere and doesn't realize that Vader already knows when he tells him during V.

[up] Star Wars comic, actually.

I think Palpatine might know by the end of the Darth Vader comic, but he obviously doesn't share the information until the movie.

Disney XD recently did a marathon for Seasons 2 and 3, so I finally got to see Season 2.

I have to say that I enjoyed myself, though the Inquisitiors using their lightsabers as helicopters was pretty silly.

[up]In fairness, there was a Lampshade Hanging where using them as such kills one of the Inquisitors, highlighting the impractical nature of reliance on a relatively fragile melee weapon for flight.

There's also Word of God that the only reason it works is because they're in a Sith Temple, and the Dark Side is so thick you could cut it with an especially sharp rock.

Ah, so we won't be seeing that particular animation again.

It's actually the single most criticized thing about the series that I've seen, probably because it's shown in otherwise very impressive episodes featuring Maul and Vader.

It breaks my heart seeing people on forums and reddit check those episodes out and become convinced that lightsaber helicopters encapsulate the show's entire tone.

What do you expect from a fandom that can never live Jar Jar and sand down?

Yeah, but there are general issues with the writing in the prequels as a whole, and Jar Jar can be held up as a symptom of that. I don't think it's fair when people pretend it's the same deal with the helicopter blades.

[up].

The sabercopters are a one-off thing that, while cringy, are not representative of the whole. Jar Jar is the result of a larger, ever-present issue.

As for people who write off the whole show because of one egregiously bad thing that unfortunately happens to be in what is considered one of, if not the best episode - forget them. There is not, and never will be, a work of fiction in which I can't cherry pick something to cite as why I should dismiss it altogether. So yeah, just, forget them. Meanwhile, the adults in the fandom will be enjoying a good show. Or presenting a reasonable reason to not watch it.

I actually like the idea of saber-helicopters. They're silly and nonsensical, but they're fun too and I appreciate that. Fun is something that Star Wars always needs more of.

but HOW?

Do the trains run on time in the Empire? I get the feeling that they do. I have a hard time seeing Thrawn swear allegiance to a disorganized mess. It's no longer canon, but in TIE Fighter one of the missions in the campaign involves stopping a war between two warring planets. Granted it's not canon anymore, but it does seem like something the Empire would do, especially if it meant "welcoming" the two planets into the Empire.

I've never really seen any evidence in the new canon that the Empire was anything but a mess of corruption and backstabbing lunacy, and even in Legends any attempts to make the Empire look competent felt like they were really stretching.

Besides, canon!Thrawn is apparently just spying on them for the Chiss. Gauging strengths and stuff to see if they can do anything against some nebulous threat in the Unknown Regions or something.

but HOW?

It's probably fine in the Core, but as you move outward, things get progressively worse.

It's not like Palpatine has any reason to value an efficient Empire. There is after all for many years no serious opponent who could threaten his rule, and it is pretty clear that he underestimates the Rebellion until the very end. And even then, it is quite clear that the Rebellion would have never succeeded without Luke. The only thing he needs to be cautious of are Jedi survivors and possibly a coup within the Empire. By making the Empire inefficient, he (like e.g. Hitler) also makes sure that no one can accumulate enough ressources to challenge him.

Of course in the EU, this might have backfired once the Yuuzhan Vong had shown up, but since there is no evidence for some similar enemy in the new Canon, the Emperor has no motivation to keep the Empire capable of defending against a serious outside threat.

Not to seem like I'm defending Hitler (really though, DEFINITELY not doing that; Palpatine MAYBE), but did he not commission the most efficient public road system ever?

As a despot, I think you actually would want to keep things running smoothly, at least for the most powerful private citizens (i.e. those in and near the Core), since the last thing you want to do is inconvenience them to the point of inspiring an uprising. They stamp out rebellion in the Outer Rim, but it doesn't actually concern them until the various small rebel groups band together to form the Rebel Alliance. The Outer Rim groups are small and poorly equipped. But if Core worlds were to start rebelling? That's a different story.

I mean they built the Death Star twice, not to mention the Super Star Destroyers, the regular Star Destroyers, and the whole rest of the Imperial Armada. How disorganized can they be?

[up][up]Not really... the Autobahn was commissioned before the NSDAP took over, they just took credit and arbitrarily redefined the already built bits to not be Autobahn.

Quite likely a lot of civilian 'trains' ran on time... until Episode IV. "How will the Emperor maintain control without the bureaucracy?" It might have been corrupt and bloated, but when it comes to efficiently running things on a larger scale, that's far better than gutting it and relying on tribute (which you then don't even get as much as you thought you would because the thing you were supposed to be using to extract it got blown up).

Military trains run on time. Civillian ones do not, if they run at all. Honestly, the Empire reminds me more of USSR and the Eastern Bloc than it does Nazi Germany.

Zarastro Since: Sep, 2010

Didn't one of the new Canon books also state that the Empire pooled all of its' ressources into its' military, which in return caused a decrease of living standards across the Galaxy? If a government simply throws everything it has at a project, it is almost assured to get results, but this doesn't mean that not a lot of it is wasted or used inefficiently.

If i remember correctly, this was also one of the reasons why Mon Mothma drastically downsized the fleet of the New Republic.

ViperMagnum357 Since: Mar, 2012
#7097: Jul 2nd 2017 at 4:11:27 PM

[up]The Empire strip mined entire worlds into ruin, taking everything they could and allowing pollution and industrial byproducts to poison entire biospheres, rendering them uninhabitable-all to feed a war machine with no enemy to fight, only a population to oppress. The fleet was far too top heavy, with star destroyers being huge money pits to operate and good for little more than orbital bombardment and troop deployment. Not to mention the Death Stars, whose resources each of which could have increased the fleets by a substantial margin.

In the new canon, Mon Mothma makes a point that actually policing the galaxy only requires a fleet one tenth the size of the Imperial Navy, plus small local security fleets to make up the local garrisons and patrols. It was also a gesture of good faith, putting power back in the hands of planetary governments and assuring them the New Republic is not going to govern through fear.

God Fucking Dammit, Filoni. This is the kind of shit we need to see, either on the show or in Ahsoka's fucking book. Not read on Twitter.

Rebels Chat interview with Filoni Kallus' first name is Alexsandr. Filoni reaffirms he has the full story for the Sith Holocron lady and what happened at Malacor. Ezra's animal Force affinity thing will come up again. Hera, Sabine, and Zeb are respectively Air, Fire, and Earth benders.
