So what Trope Decay targets do you find it most unpleasant to watch decay?

I love the Eldritch Abomination. I think that they're the scariest and most epic (in the true sense of the word "epic") concept for a fantastic antagonist, especially in a cynical work. However, it seems to be decaying into "big squid monster" because of people pastiching Lovecraft and particularly because of Lovecraft Lite. I understand people criticizing "Hey, big squid monsters aren't that scary", but they often sum this up as "Eldritch Abominations are lame", when in reality the only Eldritch Abominations that are big squid monsters are the ones created by obnoxious writers with no imagination whatsoever.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

I have to agree entirely with that actually. Yeah, if it' a parody that's cool, but otherwise it's just plain boring. Another one I have is what people think Deconstruction mean i.e. dark and gritty. Sure they can be like that, but not exclusively.

Theres sex and death and human grime in monochrome for one thin dime and at least the trains all run on time but they dont go anywhere.

I don't have any of my own that I can think of, but I whole-heartedly agree with the two posters above. Especially P Down. I love Eldritch Abominations when done properly.

And I've even seen people characterising Lovecraft's writings as purely trying to squick the reader with slime and monsters. It's enough to make me cry Manly Tears, I tell you...
