How stupid can someone be? The sad thing is that this isn't the first time I've heard of something like this.

It isn't natural for humans to be vegan. Without supplements, a vegan diet will eventually kill you.

Breastmilk is basically made out of whatever you consume. If you have a deficiency in a vitamin, the baby who feeds on that breastmilk won't get it either.

I think the title is misleading. I Thought It Meant vegans were cramming a boat dock in protest over some kid's death.

Any rate, the folks kinda deserve the neglect charges. Having a kid changes everything even activist diets. Since the vegan lifestyle does not adequately provide for the human body nutrition wise, there's no way you can try to nurse a baby on a vitamin and protein deficient diet like veganism.

Oh for the love of mighty shitcunts, why the fuck is this world full of retards like these. Seriously, who the hell thinks a baby could survive on vegan breast milk.

That's horrific. You can't do that to a child. That's all I have to say.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

It's harder to get for humans to get vitamin b12 because of sanitation and agriculture. In a natural environment we would have gotten it.

"All of the Vitamin B12 in the world ultimately comes from bacteria. Neither plants nor animals can synthesize it. But plants can be contaminated with B12 when they come in contact with soil bacteria that produce it. Animal foods are rich in B12 only because animals eat foods that are contaminated with it or because bacteria living in an animal's intestines make it."

Anyway, this anti-vegan crap is annoying.

^ I'd dare ya to survive on a vegan diet in the Colorado mountains, but that would send somebody to their guaranteed death in the winter.

But since the kid in the OP's article did suffer a vitamin deficiency it's safe to say it was squarely because of the vegan diet and as such the parents were negligent in the kid's welfare for not knowing that vegan diets are inherently poor nutrition.

I'm not really anti-vegan (even if I do like meat), but I am vigorously anti-stupid. If they're living a vegan lifestyle they should have known about the consequences and reacted accordingly. But what should we expect in this World Gone Mad.

Whatever happend to breastfeeding...? is that now viewed as 'evil' or something by the hardcore vegan crowd?

The problem is not that they are vegans. The problem is that when their daughter began to suffer from malnutrition, they not only refused to provide proper medical care for her, but refused to so much as change her diet.

That said, they probably should not be prosecuted. They did not neglect her, they just tried caring for her in stupid ways.

[up] They also refused to listen to doctors when the pediatrician flat told them that the kid had severe malnutrition as well as bronchitis and needed to be hospitalized. I'd call that neglect.

[up] They tried to treat her as they thought best, with her health in mind. It just happens that "as they thought best" turned out to be really, really stupid.

So if you tied a child to a potty in the basement for five years because you sincerely believed that it was in the child's best interest, does that make it not neglect?

[up] Well, yes, but only because it would be active abuse rather than neglect.

A credulous fool might believe in veganism (especially without vitamin supplements) or in eschewing modern medicine entirely in favor of snake oil. No one could possibly believe that your scenario would have any possible benefit for the child, except people with catastrophic mental retardation or severe mental issues. Those people should not be allowed to care for children in the first place.

@Wanderhome: Stupidity should be painful. Especially when a kid dies because of it. 30 years in a concrete box for not noticing that your child has shed nearly half its weight, to say nothing of ignoring a doctor's advice in favor of crap they looked up on the Internet sounds about right to me.

[up] They did notice that their child lost half her weight. They ignored the doctor out of stupidity, not malice or neglect. If you're going to prosecute them, you might as well prosecute the people who published the books they got their ideas from.

Their stupidity has already been painful. Their daughter is dead, and with luck this case will be an object lesson to others who might try the same crap. Besides, you're the one who said stupid people should not breed.

Stupid idiots. Just keep them somewhere where they can't have anything they could hurt themselves with.

Oh, and feed them on meat and milk.

In hindsight, that was a mistake.

@Wander: I did say that, and crap like this is why. Besides, taking her to the doctor matters not if they turn around and ignore his advice. As the military would put it, they were guilty of dereliction of duty.

The article was not clear; were they convicted of murder, or manslaughter? Does France even recognize manslaughter (death by accident) as different from murder (death by intent)? I don't know French legal code.

Wander: Hold on—people whom they've never met are suddenly to blame for this? It is the reader who misused the work, not the author. (Unless the author suggested that this lifestyle was in any way healthy for babies, or that they were experts and could be consulted in place of your doctor, in which case we do have an issue)

So does that mean that DC is to blame when somebody thinks it's a good idea to jump off a building in a superman costume? Actually, no, that's not a good comparison since Superman's a work of fiction.

The more I read about crap like this, the more vocal I feel about requiring parenting licenses. It's not a fucking right to be trusted with the care of a living being that's so fragile. Why is driving a privilege and not a right? Because there's such steep costs to stupidity and ignorance. Same. Damn. Thing. Make people take a class, pass a test, get psychological screening, and then let them have children. I know it's going to be expensive, but I sincerely believe a system like that would be worth it in the end. Who knows how many tragedies we could prevent if we could just root out the drug abusers or psychologically unstable people or just plain educate the unedcuated before they have kids?

parenting licenses

I like this idea. There are so many people that just do not know how to handle a kid. Like these people, for example.

Really. How stupid do you have to be?
