Well, actually, a good image for the trope has two things:
- : Something important in the process of happening
- : Some sign that we won't see the result until the next installment.
Find a pic with both of those, easily recognized, and you've got a page image.

Well, I'd decided to browse through all my Vigilante comics to see if there were any possible suitable cliffhangers. Found four that might fit, scanned them in, uploaded them, cropped them, and re-sized them. Personally (out of the images that I scanned), I think that the one with the fire and the one with the police pointing the gun at the Vigilante might be the most suitable. One of them may be too wordy, and I'm not sure how cliffhangy the other one is. But, I'll guess I'll let you guys decide.
I wish we could use something like this [1]◊ .....
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!If I was on the desktop, I could make the text prettier, but I think this works well enough; view image for wiki size.
Is that your Tune in next week there? I would prefer the background image to be less Literal Cliff Hanger.
Sparkling and glittering! Jan-Ken-Pon!Yeah, I just whipped that up...I was trying to portray the most outrageous kind of cliffhanger I could think of.

I really like that.
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.Damn. I managed to find a picture of a very cliffhanger-y ending from The Man From Uncle, where the protagonist is stuck in a cheesy death trap (I love that series). With a 'tune in next week' text over it, it would work as an image, be an example in-work, and not invoke Literal Cliff Hanger confusion. Unfortunately, the pic is grainy as eff.◊
Anyway, I think Willbyrs concept could work, though a picture not involving cliffs may be a better choice. I also think some of sparkykandy's suggestions may work after some cropping.
BIG SCREAMING EDIT!: I found a clear image of the scene!◊ I repeat, I found a clear image of the scene!

This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish.I prefer the car one myself. It's a liter cliffhanger, big, and the tune in next week factor all portray this trope perfectly. UNCLE example I'm against only because it doesn't convey a sense of "See what happens next time." I could easily just see that as a death trap or such since nothing to tell it is a cliffhanger.
Improving as an author, one video at a time.I'm in the same boat with the UNCLE suggestion...it works fine as a death trap, but I'm not getting a cliffhanger feel from it.
The Fire one is good and the car is good.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.The car pic was edited together, right? We could just slap a similar text on the UNCLE one, and not even be lying. Besides, as I think I said, a picture being a literal cliffhanger could cause people to confuse this with, well, Literal Cliffhanger.

This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish. You'd think somebody would've assembled a mix of the 1960 Batman cliffhangers to pick from ... but I'm not finding much on Youtube about it. Mostly just this.
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.Bump.
First key to interpreting a work: Things mean things.I added 'TO BE CONTINUED...' to the UNCLE picture (which, as I cannot stress enough, is an actual example of the trope) in a font as closely as possible resembling the one used by the series. I made two versions, one with the text at the bottom and one with the text in the middle:

This implies, quite correctly, that my mind is dark and damp and full of tiny translucent fish.Either one of those are good...I can't really decide which one I like better, although I lean toward the one with the text in the middle.
I prefer the text centered, since the series that did use cliffhangers very often did splash the TBC across the center of the screen.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.I like them.
Fight smart, not fair.Bump...any other thoughts?
That Rockwell looks very... natural. I support the centred version, too; any idea for the caption?
The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman."Poe should sue someone."
We need to wrap this. The second version of the Man from U.N.C.L.E. pic is up and potholed; locking up.
For the record, I'm not a fan of either the OOTS image or the comic panel you posted. Both have far more text than is needed to convey the trope. I just disagreed with your reason for not liking it.
