It could also be he has friends or his parents could be on good terms with management. There is favoritism in every job, though some are a lot worse.

For example, in my last security post we had a guy with three sexual harassment warnings, where one is usually enough to end a career at a location never mind with the company, the guy came in stoned, hungover, and out of uniform, and a litany of other sins. He got away with it because he was the boss's drinking buddy on the weekends despite the rest of us easily being better guards and carrying his weight almost every other week.

I don't pull the race card out often or lightly.

Their Chinese recipes are from a book written in the eighties by a white woman (all I will say). The higher ups (owner, marketing, etc) are all white and Jewish. They do not remotely understand curry, Indian or otherwise. When criticized by people of color who say "this isn't even close to the stuff our moms made" they are completely dismissed with "this is our own interpretation of your cultural recipes, we're not aiming for accuracy" yet they will adhere as closely as possible to the recipes adapted from their own grandmother's holiday recipes, and white European countries in general.

Despite the fact that there are a lot of people who refer family members to work here, he's one of the few people who isn't a cousin, sibling, or child of any of the management. He isn't old enough to drink, and the managers usually hop to the bar across the street, so he doesn't actually hang out with them. I'm not ruling out parents or older siblings being friends.

Also, one of the few Black coworkers and friends told me she's been passed up for both promotions and raises due to weak points of criticism, and white people who have less experience have been promoted instead.

Trust me. My work is racist. Granted, it's middling racist. Not violent. I can tolerate working there for as long as necessary. But I won't miss it when I switch jobs, and I certainly won't go back unless I'm desperate.

Yeah, that sounds like a bit of a shit hole and they are going to mistreat any "outsiders". Nothing is worse than a closed circle of clannish and semi-hostile people running their own shop. Especially if aside from a few people everyone else is family or a few friends of their family. That and they sound like prime candidates for something from Kitchen Nightmares. I almost feel sorry for that kid they promoted. People like that have a nasty habit of turning on others for utterly petty things. They sound like they are dicks in general as well as racist. Worked in a few bad restaurants as a dishwasher a long way back and this sounds like one of the worst ones I worked in.

How do you screw up a curry? Kind of hard to screw up a curry, that takes some pretty serious effort to mess up even the most basic curry dishes pretty much everyone can get.

Next week I'm going to move from unofficially managing the store I've been at for over a year in the interim between the manager they promoted out and the manager they're promoting in to semi-officially managing a store with much lower traffic that I'd actually be comfortable with the responsibility of.

It sounds almost like a promotion. My current is kind of like that. Lower key and less stress.

I mean, it's a promotion in the sense that I'm going to be considered a manager instead of just having to do all the work of a manager because there's a vacuum that needs to be filled.

The reason it's only semi-official is because Corporate has a training requirement for store managers that the franchisee I work for can't give me now because they need a minimum of two people to take the training at a time.

Tuef: Well, a curry is made up of spices and when you take most of the spices out it tends to ruin things... lol. I'm not blaming the kid, though. Apparently he didn't even ask for the position, they just picked him seemingly at random. Which is, y'know, another point against the management.

Para: That sounds needlessly complicated, but I'm glad they're acknowledging that you were practically a manager anyway.

They didn't offer to promote me into managing my current store because the last they knew, I wasn't interested, and they probably had the other guy in mind for it. Though when they offered the old manager the promotion, one of the first things he said to me about it was an informal "you still don't want to be a manager, right?"

But then I suspect it was between when I told the district manager I'd be open to manage a lower-volume store and when they made me the offer, the manager of the new store put in his two weeks and they've been scrambling to fill vacancies. Back in November or so, they announced management openings and I was told informally by my now-former manager that they'd been disappointed I hadn't raised my hand because they thought I'd be good for this store I'm going to now. I changed my mind between then and now because I've had time to consider that not every store is as busy as this one and I practically managed this store during the manager's post-Christmas vacation when everybody got sick at once and now during this interim, so I know I can do it.

The team member I'm going to be working with there is moving from a store about as busy as where I am now, but has been helping out a little here, and got a taste of the new store this week. The report back was "where's the rush? There's supposed to be rushes?"

So I work in a insurance company mostly making calls, and today, as I was going on the usual script talking about all the benefits and that entire load of BS, out of nowhere a baby on the other side of the line SCREAMED LIKE THE WORLD IS ENDING and I had to spend the rest of the call desperately trying (and failing) not to laugh.

Things have been pretty hectic at Safeway since the coronavirus reached my hometown two days ago. So many people have been panic-buying that at the busiest part of today, the checkout line stretched all the way around to the pharmacy at the back of the store, even with three checkers and four self-checkout machines. People are now only allowed to buy four bottles of hand sanitizer and two packs of toilet paper per visit, but we're already out of both those things. I had to stay late today and yesterday to collect all the carts.

That is rough man. Retail almost always sucks.

The location I am at is going to be decommissioned and then sold off in the next few years. No idea what the official plans are for the current guard staff. We have a few options but some of them are kinda crappy ones.

I'm applying for a supervisor position in a slightly different department (cheese as opposed to the deli). I'm confident that I'll get the job seeing as the current supervisor is leaving at the end of March and it seems no one else has applied. Also, cheese is much smaller so it's an ideal training opportunity. So I just need to ace my interview tomorrow.

Good news: I think I did pretty well on the interview.

Bad news: When I mentioned we were a little short staffed, my interviewer insisted we weren't. Later in the interview she mentioned how people in the cheese department often work overtime to the point of twelve-hour shifts—because for some reason, they absolutely cannot take on seasonal workers like deli or bakery. Sigh. At least there were a couple of other people interested in the position so I don't have to feel guilty for turning it down if I'm offered. The money is somewhat tempting but I also want an actual life outside of my work, thanks.

Medtronic is seriously ramping up production, we're down to a skeleton crew due to quarantines, so now we get to work 12 hour shifts.

A whopping $10/hr! "Stock fluctuations unfortunately mean we're going to have to enact some cost cutting measures to remain economically viable in the coming market" or somesuch bullshit to turn down any notion of even a temporary raise for us remaining folk.

And key to our production is a little machine that hasn't seen any maintenance for almost 20 years because the overlords are too cheap to shell out a few grand for a visit from a qualified engineer. Guess when it decides to break down?

So here I am doing the robot's job by hand at about 1/10th the optimal output and now my coworkers are suddenly calling in to voluntarily quarantine and my boss wants me to stay and I am in the high risk category and "Could you come in 4 hours early today?" and. . .

headdesk

Not really. We were overstaffed until shit hit the fan recently. Crazy as it sounds 10/hr is considered good pay compared to almost everything else here if it's a full-time 40hr+ position. Some others like a few retail places offer 11-12 but it's nothing full time. Frustrating as it is I'm just glad to have something at the moment.

A couple months ago I was hired by a local supermarket to fulfill online orders.

I like my job, especially the exercise of walking around and pushing a cart for 4 hours.

Unfortunately, my first day was right when the lockdown began. Everyone's been panic buying, the store has placed unit limits on many items...

Another perfect landing.
