My guess is that she's actually a fencer, but it's still just because of the Rule of Funny.

Mostly does better things now. Key word mostly. Writes things, but you'll never find them. Or you can ask.ORAORAORAORA
Ahem. This is Mayview. A random waitress developing insane fencing prowess when faced with a gross bug is really nothing unexpected.
I'm not sure I get the joke in the alt text.
Writer, or something. And... a button? 🖲️Looks like that fly is Deader than Dead, judging by the hungry fish spirit in panel 5.
Zarei stopped being aloof around Day solely because the latter giggled cutely.
We'll probably never find out what that scene was about.
Darn.
For a second I thought that the fly was supposed to be the Train's spirit, since the color it was as it flew away was very chartreuse-y. But then I remembered it drowned. So that's one theory written off.
Welp, Zarei's getting the most expensive salad on the menu.
Adding on to , the "My father's family name was Pirrip" bit is from the beginning of Great Expectations, which is the narrator's life story. So it's a stand-in for Zarei going "so here's my life story."
@DatLonerGirl: Also the joke is that she's suddenly decided to spill her life story, hence that text in particular.

Ready for sock puppet spirit.
You're right, those kids taking selfies in the foreground all look like they have "recurring boss fight" potential.
According to the description, they're just cameos from someone else's webcomic.
Oh God! Natural light! Please tell me ithat is a sockpuppet spirit
MAX
Despite my screen-name, ranting to you about One Piece is not my top priority. So she does remember Max, if that's what the comic is implying via Answer Cut.

But it would also imply that Zarei knows Max, and that's the part I'm going ??? at.
I mean, she technically does, just not intimately. And it could easily be a case of Day thinking Zarei knows a thing when in reality she doesn't (but that won't stop her from pretending so in order to get information and as such i look forward to a lot of awkward, forced friendly chit-chat between them later on)
Isn't that Dinosaur Head Picky Thing lady in the background?
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Max is just so done. Max for only sane man.
... I thought that giant biting child's toy person was a dude. I only remember them being refered to in the second person.
You can see her cleavage in this comic, not that I was paying much attention to that. And I think you could see slight curves in her earlier appearance.
Writer, or something. And... a button? 🖲️
She didn't just stab with surprising accuracy, she moved into a fencing stance (body turned, weapon forward, free hand behind the back). Considering the amount of detail this comic always uses, it really feels intentional to me instead of just Rule of Funny.
