I heard there was an extremely deadly earthquake in Japan just now, and, considering troper interests, I thought that a topic about it would be needed at some point.

They think it'll cause tsunamis, too.

At first I didn't realize I needed all this stuff...

8.8, isn't that, like, insanely high?

Pacific Tsunami Center says it was a 7.9 - which is still very high.

No clue if a tsunami is generated yet, but I'm glued to the warning center website until I hear otherwise.

THIS THREAD IS RELEVANT TO MY INTERESTS

Yes, very insanely high.

8.8 is only like 1.2 away from 10, which is probably only going to happen when the end of the world happens.

Fortunately, I'm about a thousand feet above sea level, as I live in Makakilo on Oahu.

It's Honolulu I'd be freaking out over right now.

Um, This is a great time for the west coast to take a hundred mile drive to the east.

We'll know more if the West Coast is under threat in a bit. No clue if even Hawaii is under a threat at this point.

Not that that little bit of non-information is making my heart rate get any slower - it's worse.

Wikipedia has nothing on this yet, although they do have info about one in China.

I'm okay for now - but we'll see what happens in six hours, won't we...?

Tsunamis take time to traverse the ocean. I have time to make sure I got batteries, candles, cans of SPAM and whatever else, all that jazz. Although, I bet there's 'already a run on the stores.

Wikipedia: "A 8.8 (upgraded from 7.9 earlier) magnitude earthquake hits offshore of Japan's Miyagi prefecture with a tsunami warning issued for waves as high as 6 metres. (Canadian Press via Google News), (AP via ABC News America)" [1]

Yeah, they upgraded it on the PTWC website. And it did generate tsunami.

Damn it, I want my wife home NOW.

Isn't Japan one of those places that earthquakes fucking love?

Japan is one of those awesome/weird places that I knew would get wiped out by a big fucking natural disaster that the world would always remember, and Japan would live on as a Myth of Awesome.

Seriously though, this sucks. I'm not the praying kind of person, but I can hope they are safe all the same.

[up] Don't jinx us bitch! Damn it! Where my horseshoes at? I need a black cat...wait, that's bad luck. Need a white cat. Or some other cat and bleach. Everyone throw salt over your shoulder! Unless your pet snail is behind you. Then throw pepper. Whatever.

No, the USGS reported it as 8.8. Apparently, they're sticking with it. There's been a shitload of aftershocks.

Pacific area was on tsunami advisory for a bit, it's gone for the Philippines...

We're on a Watch. They're figuring out if they need to upgrade or cancel.

I hate the waiting game.

My wife will be heading home for the in-laws in a bit, hope the traffic doesn't get stupid with panic shopping.

Looks like you west coast guys are okay for now, though.

The US geological survey is calling 8.9 now, but all of the other sources can't seem to make up their mind.

I think I will settle for "really fucking big" until there's more of a consensus.
