I'm going to make a seperate discussion for renaming this, so this thread can have its original purpose.

Edit: Actually, I'm going to wait on it first and look at the examples. All of the ones I've seen outside of the article have never been Awesome Moments.

Yeah, rename.

Do you think we should risk splitting it, or...

I've also posted a wrong example on that page before. I definitely think it needs some clarification.

Dammit, I was planning on going to bed in a few minutes, but then y'all had to go and make me look at the Film subpage. Ugh, the blood (well, pixels, I guess, but that's kinda non-dramatic tongue ) will be flying when I get a chance...

Going off to fix the Film section. Tons of misused examples.

Edit: There, I've cleaned out most of the improper examples. Lots of cases where someone was talking about opportunities that weren't properly utilized.

"The thing can be missed out, it's not just "hiding things" it is setting up the anticipation or potential for a thing and then not having it, with no constraint on the not having it. This worry about the misuse didn't come up in the rename thread and it wasn't incorporated into the name. This doesn't mean there isn't misuse. I've probably seen "I wish this had happened" a couple more time then I should have but it is perfectly reasonable for the "anticipation" to be that it happened in the book and the let down to just be "they didn't put it in the film adaptation". "

No, that sounds more like Adaptation Distillation than a MMOA. If an "awesome" scene is in a work, but is only referenced by other characters and/or never shown, then it would qualify. If it's an "awesome" scene from a work that doesn't make the jump to an adaptation and is never said to have happened in said adaptation, it doesn't qualify.

I second the motion for a rename crowner.

Another vote for Offscreen Moment of Awesome. I don't think we need the "they should have done this, but didn't" at all. Mostly, its just a more specific version of They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot.

+1 for OMoA, here.

And thanks for saving me that headache, crazyrabbits.

Offscreen for me as well.

Also, with a proper definition we could make this neutral.

Offscreen Moment of Awesome would definitely be taken off the YMMV index. Just look at the quotes. Those are all perfectly objective examples.

Pruned the Live Action TV section. About 50-60% of the examples were being used incorrectly. Lots of misuse of What Could Have Been (which is only when letters/interviews/stories related to unused concepts is referenced) and people talking about things they would have liked to see, but never happened in the first place.

Are we going to get a crowner on this? I've just pruned even more entries in the last few minutes. People are still misusing this as a fan version of What Could Have Been.

Another for Offscreen Moment of Awesome, the biggest problem is that it was being used as more of a forum topic instead of a genuine trope "Guys, I had this idea that would have been so cool." Even the YMMV tropes can be used intentionally, regardless if they actually succeed according to the audience (I can see a director saying "And this is going to be his Crowning Moment Of Awesome."). How can someone actually use a trope that is about fans coming up with a random idea they perceive as being better than what was actually shown?

Offscreen Moment of Awesome sounds good; does a deleted scene in which someone does something "awesome" count as such a moment, or would the characters need to reference it in the final film?

@dsneybuf: As being discussed in this thread, the event has to be mentioned in the final work*

for it to count.

I was just about to say we should change it to "Offscreen" and then I scrolled down and saw half a dozen posts ninja'ing me. Then I scrolled up and saw I was the one who originally suggested it. Boy, coming back to old threads is weird.
