If anyone remembers the classic Greek fable of the two brothers who hitched themselves up as oxen and died hauling their mother to town...behold the modern version.

If I had to die that young, and could choose when, that's when I'd want to. Straight after doing something that I enjoyed.

Be not afraid...

reminds me of that story of a one of those dogs from up north who compete in mushing races who trudged on and brought victory to its owner...only to fall over dead as soon as the race was done.

It was how the first marathon started.

Though, if he's athletic enough to get on the team at all, how could he have died of heart problems? Something must've went seriously wrong.

It was on CNN earlier today, they were saying something about his enlarged heart - which, if he hadn't been getting proper medical physicals, could easily have gone undetected until it killed him.  *

If this was fiction, this would be hilarious.

But this isn't fiction, so it isn't funny in the slightest.

We had something similiar happen in my barracks:

They're doing baseketball for morning Physical Fitness, and this one guy, in his early 20's, had a massive heart attack on the court.

That's kind of a bummer way to go, though. I always feel like if a youth gets taken out before they've had a chance to progress into that timespan beyond their peak condition, that they've been cheated in a way. Yeah, he was probably at or near the apex of his physical condition - but now he can't revel in the memories, have fun recounting the victory and all that other stuff.

Yeah, it's messed up when people die young - especially when they're talented like this kid was. How coudl he have turned out if he hadn't died then? Maybe, "gee, I feel crappy, think I have to sit the last few minutes out" or something, finds out his heart is messed up, but with care, is able to have a shot at the rest of his life...

So, in a way, we're all cheated when this happens - all of society loses a little bit when stuff like this goes down. Yeah, I understand that when it's your time to go, it's yoru time to go, but dang it, he had his whole life in front of him.
