Also, holy crap, a ship even bigger than the Capital Ships? Can't wait to make a fleet out of that, but I really hope that the three main factions are still playable.

I've been playing Entrenchment (I never got Diplomacy; is it worth it?), and right now I'm on a five hour-going-on-six game on the map Implosion, where it's a four-way game with teams of two.

One of the A.I.s built his defenses facing the wrong direction (or rather, he built them in the right direction, but I took one of his planets after three hours of slugging back and fourth with full navies), and so I took over his whole sector of the map in a lightning offensive. Unfortunately, the two last planets of his had goddamn starbases (he's Vasari, I'm TEC), so I had to whip out the torpedo launcher guys and plow through that.

...I've still got five AI players to kill, too, and the one I just dispatched has the most powerful AI in the game as his partner, and I think he has a bigger fleet than me. ;_;

It took me forever to learn this game properly. I still play almost entirely on Kronac's Kross to keep the map simple.

I was reading the old thread and snickering at how you failed miserably at defense building.

I personally have never had a problem with making tough-as-fuck defenses in that game. I build heavily concentrated overlapping zones of fire so the enemy has to go through a boatload of hail just to hit the starbase, which inevitably will have the "you must kill the starbase to bomb the planet to death" upgrade to make them come to me.

The only thing that ever gives me trouble are the wretched structure-killer ships. I hate those fuckers. Such is why I love fighting the Vasari: they don't have dedicated structure-killers. Well, that, and the Advent structure-killers are piss-weak, so really it's just the TEC torpedo ships that piss me the fuck off.

I personally love the Advent starbase. It's ludicrously overpowered. Of course, I modded the game so every starbase gets 12 upgrades max, not 8, so starbases are even worse. The AI is kind of shit about it, though. They spend money on the trade upgrades and shit and they won't buy the special ability upgrades, so their starbases are tough but vulnerable to my classic battlecruiser with range enhancement passive + artillery attacks...

Like I said, it took forever to learn the game. I played it the same as I did any other TRS I had played, I found a choke and built a bunch of defenses there. Problem being how open the map was and that my defenses were capped.

I tend to take over some given chunk of the map and then fortify it to the best of my ability, while building a fleet large enough to lash out. I also tend to play team games, not FFA, so while everybody else is fighting I can sit back and get ready to pwn.

When I play as the TEC I tend to spent the last half hour of large games blowing up all the enemy planets with the big old space gun, too. cool

That's a fun one. I still prefer the psychics, purely for the AOE their station can research. Such a broken spell to cast just as the enemy fleet finishes coming in. Oh, I'm sorry, did you need those shields for something?

Oh, yeah, their space station is so absurdly broken it's not even funny. Their hangers are annoying though because they have an uneven number of strike craft slots.

I'm always torn between which I like more: Advent hangers that give shields and constant regen to everything or TEC hangers that shoot down enemy strike craft like a mofo.

I don't really like Vasari defenses, because their space station is mobile and I can't properly concentrate defenses around it like I can with the other factions, and their repair node is a piece of shit. Their turret is stupidly overpowered though, especially with the anti-passive regen upgrade.

I'm not a fan of the Vasari defenses either. Giving up the AOE for the movement just isn't worth it to me. And WTF is up with a directional shield? Bah, crappy station.

One of the things I don't get, from a logic, not a gameplay point, is why they don't have multiple weapons on their ships.

Well, I personally think the Vasari space station is still the best, because those damned anti-structure ships can't hide outside its range and you can devote all its strike craft slots to fighters.

I liked the directional shield; it's rather useful. The "suck up debris" power, on the other hand, is total shit.

I wondered about that, too. Probably for balance purposes, or perhaps because of hardware limitations: too much shiny things flying around would slow the game down.

If I were designing ships, there'd still be a weapon dominance just not a weapon dedication. It's like most of them just have a single weapon grafted onto the nose.

Well, it at least makes sense for the TEC, since all their shit is haphazard and not built for combat. The handful of ships they have that are obviously built for combat—the carrier and battleship capitals and the fleet carriers—are properly armed, or, in the case of the fleet carrier, don't need armament. The light frigate, while obviously designed for combat, doesn't really need a lot of guns because it's practically a fighter, but bigger.

Part of it might be scaling. I really get the feeling that if the game were properly scaled you'd barely be able to see any of the non-capital ships...

Bull shit. Everything needs guns. Why we build warships now without at least three CIWS turrets mounted is beyond me. Point Defenseless is a terrible thing man, why would you condemn any ship to such a fate?

True, the carriers should have had little turrets on them to shoot down strike craft... that should have been their upgrade, in fact.

What annoyed me was how unfair the Vasari are with all their goddamn phase missiles. Even the fighters and anti-strike craft ships use them! They can kill everything and one weapon upgrade path covers most of their ships. So stupid...

Problem is that their repair nodes are such abject shit it's not even funny. What the fuck is that shit? Supposedly the "masters of nanotech" can't repair shit as well as the people whose main combat cruiser is a goddamn asteroid clearer? Bullshit.

Well, in the asteroid clearer's defense, you need pretty big guns to really fuck up giant space rocks. In fact, given its original job, I think that Kodiak may be underarmed.

I usually play TEC and never Vasari. It kinda says bad things about Vasari engineering that the TEC can hold them off and even beat them with uparmed and amoured civilian ships. On the other hand, I do have some gripes with the weapon placement on the ships. If I designed the Kodiak, those autocannons would probably be large gauss weapons and they'd be spinally mounted.

Someone was asking about Diplomacy, right? The pact bonuses are pretty nifty, but it's hard to get started because the pirates went from "annoyance" to "fucking brutal" as they now send a giant fleet of cruisers and planet smashers even on the first wave of pirate attacks.
