Anyone here ever wanted a sequel to Sonic the Fighters? No? Well, it doesn't really matter either way, but someone did create their own Sonic fighting game, and —shock of all shocks — it actually isn't that bad.

It's Exactly What It Says on the Tin; a Sonic fighting game that also happens to feature the Freedom Fighters. In case you couldn't guess by the intro, the game is, like Sonic Nebulous, based on the comics. It doesn't quite take as much influence from them as Nebulous — a number of stages are based off of Zones from the games, and there aren't as many comic characters to boot — but King Acorn is still in the intro, and you can play as Sally, Bunny, Rotor, and Scourge, (AKA. Evil Sonic,) which is pretty darn neat for comics fans. The game itself plays like The King Of Fighters with chain combos, so if you've ever played a single KOF game, you should know what to expect. And the sprites are amazing, especially considering they were made by one guy. It's not perfect, but for what it is, it's still pretty kickass and definitely worth checking out.

And to sweeten the pot, I uploaded my own rar of the game which adds in a few extra characters (Cream, Silver, and Omega,) done in more or less the same style, (this is MUGEN you know,) along with SatAM Robotnik and a SonicAdvance-styled Vector just to have them in there. So altogether, that brings it up 29 characters; 27 if you don't count Robotnik and Vector who are both conveniently offscreen, so you don't have to worry about them if you don't want to. Just let me know if there's any problems, because for all I know, something's bound to screw it all up, as MUGEN is a fickle mistress.tongue

Oh, and yes; Ren And Stimpy are in this game, in case you were wondering. Which you probably weren't. No, I have no clue why they're in the game. They just are. Yay?

I've always wanted to go back and start to read all the comic issues I've missed in the past few years, but when I think about how much that is (to say nothing of the money I'd have to spend to get my hands on the actual physical issues), I just go "noooo....nope" in my head. Last comic I remember was like the Dark Queen of Whatever took over after Eggman went crazy and then Espio went off to go do unspecified ninja things and oh my God I only just now realized Espio's name is a play on the word "espionage" due to autocorrect.

Anyway, I know there was the reboot of the comics, but there's still a bunch since then, AND Sonic Universe, AND the magazines, AND others I know I'm forgetting. It's too much, and I say this as someone who went to my local comic shop a LOT as a kid to get every Sonic issue I could to try and collect them all.

[up]You think that's too much, try reading nearly every single issue of The Avengers known to man. Which (up until the Hickman run a few years back anyway; just so boring,) I had actually done. And I managed to watch Star Trek TOS in a couple of months, TNG in three, and the first 5+ seasons of DS 9 in just two. And right now, I've been reading Archie Sonic from the beginning, (including Knuckles,) managed to read nearly 60 issues in 2-3 weeks, (I'm on #108 right now,) and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. The point is, I can understand if you just don't have enough time on your hands or if it takes you a while to read a issue or if it just feels like too much, but for some people, (like me,) an Archive Binge is just another day at the office. In fact, we revel in it. A long-ass series or franchise with tons of continuity is a pretty big draw for some folks. And of course, money isn't an issue as long as you know where to look. (Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum and all that.tongue)

[up][up] I own issues 1 - 250 of Archie Sonic. Ironically enough, I stopped reading after Endgame and just bought them out of obligation or something. Oh, and I got the YN interview issue to be signed by YN. (YN does a LOT of interviews, doesn't he?)

I binge-watched DS9 in a couple of months, but it's taken me years to slog through TOS.

I mean, when it's good, it's good, but I just don't feel as compelled to go through it as I did DS9. *shrug*

So after reading some more blogs on Knuckles own comic and having read some of the backup strips in later issues of Sonic, I just gotta' say: My GOD is this bad.

Well, okay; that might be a tad hyperbole, but it's still not very good. To be fair, the original comic isn't as wretched as the backup strips to come, but even if you're enjoying it the first time through, when you actually take a step back and turn a more critical eye to it, it's a bit of a mess. About half of the whole comic basically boils down to informing the audience of this entire vast Echindna history which, while deserving of some credit for just how much work was put into it, doesn't always make a lot of sense. Oh noes, using some dangerous technology 400 years ago brought disaster upon the floating island! We have to do something to prevent this from happening again! And the answer? Outlaw all technology. Yes, even things as basic as electricity and automobiles. Except this is made mute because we clearly see the Echidnas in the present day using electricity and automobiles. The only thing I can figure is that by 'technology', the comic only meant 'high-level technology', but I can't think of anything more high-level than flying cars, and we see them in the fourth fucking issue. And the Dark Legion just takes all of this to a whole new level. They want to restore the old order of Echindopolis and reestablish a technology driven society even though the current Echidna society looks pretty damn technology driven to me. Oh, and they also want to establish a dictatorship in the process. Because they can. Ken Penders wasn't exactly the best when establishing characters' actual motivations, and it shows here in spades.

But the second half of the comic is just as ridiculous in its' own ways. Knuckles is constantly watched over by his ancestors without him knowing about it, and is always having to (usually,) unknowingly do their bidding and clean up their messes, and reluctantly at that. And as a result, he has barely any agency in the whole comic. The culmination of all of this is a series which, while very interesting at certain places and having some alright and even cool characters, (Spectre is the boss,) is kind of lackluster in hindsight. And that's a shame, as there's a lot of good ideas here which could have made for a truly great comic without Penders' foibles.

But the real kicker here is the later backup strips in Sonic. Knuckles ends up becoming a living Chaos Emerald and practically omnipotent, and the 'stories', if we're being charitable, amount to three new plotpoints being introduced while one or two others are concluded in the most anticlimactic fashion possible, and it's a slog to get through. To be fair, the main Sonic stories aren't always that great right now anyways, and part of what's keeping me going is that Ian Flynn's coming along with #160. That's supposed to be when the comic REALLY gets good, and I'm looking forward to getting there. In the meantime though, I've still got nearly 50 more issues with Ken Penders and possibly even green-skinned reality-warper Knuckles to go. May God help me.

I actually met Ian Flynn at a convention and got him to sign that issue, and he seemed really happy that I brought that particular issue for him to sign, even remarking, "Oh hey, that's the first one I worked on!"

And yeah, the Knux comix in general are pretty much "Exposition: The Comic" for like 30 long issues and endless backup strips. I can't remember concretely a single thing that happened in any of the Knuckles comics I read (aside from the weird four issue storyline from like 138-142, something like that, mostly because those were the first Sonic comics I ever read when they were new, and I was like "why is everyone so angry at each other and what's with all this weird religious imagery why is Knuckles the Last Airbender here what"). All I remember is him wandering aimlessly around Angel Island with a fire ant dressed like Indiana Jones on his shoulder. (Yes, I know the ant's name, and no, I don't care, because I still don't get the point of his inclusion.)

Only way to get Save Files in Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Knuckles in Sonic 2 is to get the iOS versions of Sonic 1 and 2.

Also: they're pretty short games, all told, so you shouldn't take too much time if you try to beat them in one sitting.

Or you can leave the Genesis running, I suppose, I used to do that as a kid. (Of course, as an adult I wonder how much that raises electricity bills, but hell, it's not like the TV is still running...)

Throwing a question out there:

Sonic might not be as fast as The Flash, or the Roadrunner, or Rainbow Dash. Or he might be faster than them. I don't know. Argue about it somewhere else! But here's someone I don't think he's ever been matched up against in terms of speed: himself!

Sonic from the Saturday morning cartoons (both SATAM and AOTSH, and Underground if so inclined) versus Sonic from Sonic X.

I never watched any one of the cartoons enough to know exactly what their top speeds were, or which versions of Sonic I would consider faster.

Well 2D Sonic is roughly equal to 2D Mario (with slightly worse acceleration), but 3D Sonic is significantly faster than 3D Mario.

Sonic isn't even remotely close to The Flash in terms of speed, is certainly faster than the Roadrunner, and it's hard to say how he compares to RD (since I have no idea how fast one needs to go to break the visible light spectrum and I stopped following the show early on in S2 so I don't know if she's had any major speed feats since then).

Let the joy of love give you an answer! Check out my book!

Sonic is honestly only as fast as a single scene/moment in whatever he's in needs him to be. It's never been consistent, beyond the descriptors of "faster than the speed of sound" which even then isn't applied consistently.

I was surprised to see Sonic Battle make it in there, of all things.
I'd seen it pointed out that Sonic Battle would actually have to happen after Sonic Heroes and Shadow the Hedgehog for it to feature a Shadow who's confident in his identity, so it's funny to imagine the events of the latter two games happening during the Egg Moon scheme, even though I've already read that Sonic X's Shadow doesn't come back until episode 60 and under completely different circumstances.

I can't remember concretely a single thing that happened in any of the Knuckles comics I read (aside from the weird four issue storyline from like 138-142,

[up][up]eh, the SA2 one isn't lame enough for it, though, the music is too good and the lyrics are too awful for it to all coalesce together as charmingly lame. Plus I didn't actually bother looking for an a capella of the SA2 version, since I haven't listened to it nearly enough to know how to edit it in a way that works.

also memes.
