I just hope we get a true 3D Sonic experience with Modern Sonic, I am somewhat tired of Sonic having 3D in one section and going back to 2D. Even the Classic Sonic had a pseudo Rush style experience on the 3DS and Classic Sonic is actually very merciful compared to Rush.

Not gonna lie, I was a bit unhyped when I saw Classic back since he's already getting a classic(and fantastic looking) game. Like really, the best parts of Generations were the modern levels, not the classic ones so it pains me to see that Team Colors can't seem to think Modern sonic can't stand on his own. Honestly would've been more hype had it been shadow and we got a sonic/shadow game. Minus the stupid gun crap of course lol.

I don't want to squander potential for this game by playing it too safe, but I worry this game will do.

Just when I'm out they pull me back in. =w=

Sega's overall really reluctant when it comes to having characters other than Sonic himself be playable.

I still wish that Shadow was playable in Generations for the Modern levels (as for Classic....Knuckles? Tails?).

I guess I'm just happy because I got what I wanted. Retro 2-D Sonic game and Generations-model game is awesome and I think it's the best direction for the series. The fact that they didn't rush either for the anniversary is a good sign too.

You've got to play to your strengths and go with what works and Sega finally seems like it's doing that. I think this is a good sign for the Sonic brand.

I do say that I am intrigued that Project Sonic looks to be returning to the darker tone that the earlier 3D games had.

Sonic was a fairly dark, serious series yet it didn't always itself too seriously and it knew when to give you time to breathe. I really wish it would fine a balance between comedy and seriousness rather than being one extreme or the other extreme. Also, I want an actual 3D gameplay for Sonic as opposed to the Unleashed style where it is 3D for one part of the level and 2d in the other part.

please not the dark/not dark/middle? discussion again, that goes in more loops here than Sonic himself.

I have to say, both trailers left me with a reaction of "I am underwhelmed, but these look to at least be good, so eh, I'll take it." I can say that at least of Sonic Mania (seriously, did they get the '90s Pac-Man team to name this?), which looks to be a pretty decent homage of a game, and Christian Whitehead's involvement ensures that it'll at least be mechanically rock-solid.

The Not!Generations one, not 100% on. It looks interesting and promising, but I'm not totally sure on bringing Classic Sonic as a partner back. Even as someone who was raised on Sonic 2, the Classic levels were probably the least fun of the main levels (if we ignore the final boss and all of Planet Wisp), and the Modern levels were generally fantastic fun. I get what they're doing, and it's a bit...eh, I dunno. As long as it plays well and is fun, whatever, I'm probably gonna buy it no matter what anyway.

You ever get the feeling that Sonic doesn't have a fanbase anymore and it's just devolved into arguing people who USED to like Sonic but each have a different view on what it should be now?

I'm guessing that Sonic 2017 has more to do with dimensions than time travel.

The Bad Future type area Sonic & Sonic found themselves in is actually a dimension where Eggman won.

Neither Modern nor Classic are the Sonic from previous games.

The dimension thing will let them keep Classic around without looking like complete pandering.

Sonic has several fanbases that all want different things. Classic fans, Sat AM fans, fans that got in starting from adventure 1 or 2, probably some foreign fans that got into it from obscure comics we've never heard about, etc. He has all these different canons splitting people in all different directions so it's pretty much impossible to fit everyone's expectations.

Ironically I think it's all Robotnik's fault, because of how they localized him. In America they made manuals and story books and things where Robotnik had a much darker tone about him. But in Japan he was more of just a comical foil, who wanted to put his face on everything for attention. he was kind of like the Ice King in adventure time (the whole eggman thing we got starting with adventure). It started branching off from there, I think also partly because SEGA might have been a bit too loose with letting people make things with the property.

Didn't Gens dabble into dimensional stuff, too? That isn't really helping the "Generations: Bad Future Edition" look the game has to it so far.

I mean, Rush had a level in the 3DS version, but that's about it.

I was actually kicking around Sonic Dimensions as a name, so the idea of alternate realities sounds cool.
