It's a shame I can no longer use the handheld games as ammunition in my defense of Sonic the Hedgehog's continued relevance. The recent ones haven't been all that stellar.

[up][up]Generations is basically the epitome of what I'm talking about. You could do so much interesting stuff with the story in that game and the interactions between the different characters. Unfortunately the story we got was as bland as possible.

It really feels like since Generations that Sonic games(at least on consoles) had much more to their stories than what we got. Rise of Lyric is definitely evidence of this.

Maybe the problem isn't just the mechanics. It's his image.

Come 'roun, hear it, Sonic was created to be somebody's rival, to give Nintendo the middle finger. Sonic was cool because he was directly opposite of Mario - fast, fun, sleek, hip, he drove cars, rode skateboards, did spins, gathered bling as a resource.

These days, Mario's repertoire has expanded immensely, and there's less friction between the two. Sonic hasn't had anyone to play off of, his marketing is less driven by a need to beat Nintendo or any other particular mascot. Now Sonic's cool and happening and a rebel (to what?) and all about being "free" and "colorful" and some other electronic hippie bullshit in the lyrics (ENDLESS POSSIBILI-TEE! In-hiiiis-woooorld! We're gonna REEEEEACH - for the STARS - TONIIIIIGHT!). Note, I like these songs, but come on.

See, now if Crash Bandicoot came back dissing Sonic, SEGA would come back swinging and we'd have Sonic 5. With blackjack. And Knuckles.

1) The narrator for that video dismisses Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors as "delusions" without at all explaining why (maybe others can, but the point is that he didn't).

2) Metal Gear Solid's placement on the list is obvious filler. As in, really obvious.

[up]I still kind of prefer the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, if only because of better cross-media works. I'm still an avid reader of the Archie comic books.

Maybe it's just because I largely grew up on arcade games, arcade-style games, and platformers with little to no plot to speak of, but I generally don't clamor for great plots in my video games. A bad plot can hurt the experience and a good plot can enhance it, but, generally speaking, if the gameplay is solid, fun, and not too repetitive, I'll still enjoy it whether it has one, the other, or neither.

Unlike a lot of Sonic fans I tend to prefer continuity and somewhat more complex plots so I'm not a huge fan of it. I
I like plots like that too. In shows like The Legend Of Korra and Gravity Falls and Regular Show andnote  etc. I don't clamor for everything I watch to have that. Looney Tunes cartoons were never that complex, and plenty of those shorts are among the greatest cartoons ever created.

We've been stuck with that the second Colors somehow managed to be popular.

[up][up]Well I'm a bit weird in that I'm not a fan of animated comedies. I don't know why since live action ones are fine. Animated ones just never hold my interest.

I don't ask for Sonic games to have great stories. But games like Lost world and Rise of Lyric are the kinds of games that seem like their was more story then their what we got.

Off-topic: A little while ago, I brought up 'Sonic Generations and Knuckles' as a joke. Well now, I'm writing a fic about it. Unfortunately, most of Knuckles' spotlight was in games that I no longer own, excluding Sonic Adventure and Sonic Heroes.

A Sonic Generations parody about Knuckles and "Classic Knuckles", my idea of Classic Knuckles anyway, comedy-focused, short (because Knuckles hasn't done that much sine Sonic 2006). What I want is other opinions on what some of Knuckles' best, or most memorable stages/levels were.

Knuckles' most memorable moment for me was probably either Aquatic Mine or Death Chamber - I used to be terrified of aquatic levels, particularly AM. Death Chamber, meanwhile, was an incredible pain in the ass, and led inexplicably to King Boom Boo - which makes me wonder if Eggman was aware that his secret base was haunted. That said, the level was a great nod to the Sandopolis zone.

-

I'm thinking Classic Knuckles would just be shorter, have smaller claws, have his "base appearance", where Modern Knuckles would have the Shovel Claws, the Hammer Gloves, the Air Necklace, and those goggles from Sonic Riders.

Where I'm stuck is whether or not to fuse him with "Boom Knuckles" (make him tall and muscled, because I think its a decent distinction). Make a composite character who represents "Knuckles today"; that, or make Boom Knuckles a separate character entirely - I'm not too keen on writing "Boom Knuckles" though, and I'm not sure if there's more comedic potential with Modern meeting Boom - it gets away from the spirit of Generations somewhat.

Or, there could be a Classic, Modern, and Boom Knuckles. But three's a crowd.

-breath-

Alright, now off to the Fanfic thread.

I rediscovered Sasi Sage's Sonic and Precure crossover edit videos on youtube and they are hilarious and pretty cool.

And I still think that, had Boom sold well, they'd be focusing on that instead of main Sonic. We'd still get Sonic Runners, but we'd have a Wii U and 3DS Fire & Ice, and the show would have fewer hiatuses. They'd quietly snuff out main Sonic since his last game was Lost World. It's what I'd do if I was a money-grubbing executive, work the product that generates interest and profit.
This is making the large assumption that Sega of Japan would kowtow to Sega of America's pet project. Given past animosity between the two branchesnote , this is a pretty big assumption - although I'll confess I'm not sure how much of it still lingers today.

@Mighty Matilda I think the reason he says they're "delusions" is not that they aren't good, but that they don't represent a resurrection of the franchise. The franchise as a whole is still is suffering.

Ah, so what he meant makes sense, but he just said it in a profoundly confusing way that was almost asking for people to misinterpret it. Happens all the time, really.

Why a member of Team Rose? Just because she's female? Way to avoid gender segregation, Sonic Team.

[up][up] Well they did have good interactions in Sonic Rush. So it's not that out of order.

There's also the Team Tango Saga in the Archie Comics.

Also howdy everyone, I'm into to the Sonic franchise, despite it's up & down & all around. But I probably won't be around much because there hasn't been a Sonic game that interest me since Lost World.

But eh, i'll hang out every now between be here and there.

Also where does it say she part of Team Rose? Having a hard time finding it in the link.

That, and she seems to be closer friends with Amy on the show, compared to the others (from what I've seen anyway). It makes sense that she'd be on the same team as Amy.
