Orphan and Unknown weren't bad movies. But House of Wax was a piece of shit.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/I thought House of Wax was better than it had any right being.
The fact they need to move the story to another city is off-putting. It could still be a great film, but we all know the story was in Japan, and people will be comparing this film to it.
Even if they kept the movie in Tokyo, people will still bitch about it. It's what fans do.
Okay.
To me, this now officially doesn't exist.
I like calling this the Starship Troopers effect. I wrote a blogpost about this over the summer, and outside of the obvious racial implications, the producers want to corner the geek market and what's left of the IP's that isn't snapped up is primarily anime and video game licenses. Also, the execs figure that since kids today have a fascination with Japanese culture, they'll make a quick buck off this regardless of the quality. It's a cash-grab, plain and simple and that's what makes this ugly incident worse.
With blood and rage of crimson red ripped from a corpse so freshly dead together with our hellish hate we'll burn you all that is your fateFor a second, I couldn't tell what that image was. Then I chuckled in amusement.
I am surprised no one has posted this link already.

As of January this year, no more Western adaptation nonsense.
Jaume Collet-Serra’s ‘Akira’ Won’t Be Too Faithful to the Source Material
"Nobody’s interesting [in the anime]. Tetsuo’s interesting because weird sh*t happens to him, and Kaneda is so two-dimensional. That’s part of the Japanese culture, they never have strong characters. They’re used as a way to move the other philosophy forward."
Prodding a dozing bear here probably but this is still happening, apparently, and the signs are... mixed.

This is gonna suck.
Never assume a project that Hollywood wants to do is dead until all the players behind the decision to do it are as well.
Well at least they're warming us BEFOREHAND. You have no idea how often they DON'T do that!
Um, dude, your link leads to a 2011 article that doesn't have that quote anywhere.
Fixed it, I'd just neglected to put a space between the link and Jaume.

Um, while that's a perfectly respectable opinion, if you feel that way maybe you're the wrong guy to helm a work of fiction that comes from the Japanese culture. Just sayin'.
-slowly backs away from this project-
Looking for some stories? He does have a point about Kaneda. From what I remember about the movie, his only goal was to get with that girl and punch Tetsuo. There wasn't really all that much to him.
There's wanting to expand on the characters, and then there's the borderline-racist level of contempt that this guy seems to have for the source material.
Looking for some stories?Borderline racist? I don't think that that idiot has any idea of where that border is. I suppose that the small mercy of this farrago is that it will attract a small audience and an equally small box-office.
Yep, that one statement pretty much killed any interest I had in this project faster than Tameem Antoniades's comments on Devil May Cry and Japanese games.
Sarcasm?
