Yeah, I recently became interested in Visual Novels, mostly through the Ace Attorney series.

Does anyone have recommendations for free (legal) visual novels?

I'd be interested in any genre, really, but I'd prefer for it to be at least mostly clean.

Hm, looks interesting. I'll have to check it out later.

Thanks for the links!

There's not much you can find that's free and legal. There isn't too much problem with getting the fan-translations since we can't buy most V Ns from North America anyway.

Eh. Well, if they're suffering from the No Export for You curse, might as well check some out.

Since the company that made Ever17 went out of business, might be impossible to buy that as well. So, again, piracy is the only real answer.

Katawa Shoujo. Currently Act 1 is available and is ero-free. The full version, however, will have H-scenes but has the option to skip them.

[up][up][up] If No Export for You is ok with you, I also recommend Ever17 (clean).

And what do you mean by "mostly clean"? You know, practically none of the eroge with english fan-translations are really based around sex, they have one or two such scenes per route. (and the routes can be 10-20 hours long), and they have mosaics anyways, and most of the times you can skip them.

@September

I mostly meant no games that were essentially Hentai.

And thanks for all the recommendations! (Oh shoot, I spelled it wrong in the title...)

Katawa Shoujo in particular looks pretty interesting.

Another person mentioned Altogether 2006, an event in which fans translated freeware visual novels which they thought were exemplary. There was another Altogether event in 2005, and the last one was 2008. Here's the overall link: http://altogether.insani.org/

The Renai Archive at http://www.renai.us contains most of the freeware visual novels created in English. Most of what you'll find here is zero-budget, so don't expect to be impressed by amazing art or sound. Sturgeon's Law definitely applies. But if you dig around, you can find some well-written stories. Some of my current favorites include...

Brass Restoration: http://yandere.gray7.com/?p=64 (other games on that site are fan translations of commercial games) and Memo: http://lemmasoft.renai.us/forums/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6601

are both some freeware visual novels I've enjoyed quite a bit, and also don't have any porn. Also gonna second True Remembrance, it's really good.

...

I really want to try True Remembrance, but the download isn't starting for me.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Cnet download, right? I remember having trouble with that...

Yeah.

There was a comment on the page about it, too.

I don't wanna mess around with torrents, so the Cnet is my only hope...

Well, in a similar thread I made people also recommended, besides what has already been said here, Crimsonesss and Ballad Of An Evening Butterfly.

Crimsoness is really short and a bit weird. It's duration is only three minutes, though you'll need to replay it if you want to get the ending. Anyway, worth checking out in my opinion.

I haven't played the second one yet, so no idea how it is.

I've read the second one. It's pretty good, but a bit depressing. Parts of it reminded me of Tsukihime.

[up]I've read that. Okay stuff, better if you actually get it by yourself, I guess.

And hey, I guess this counts as a visual novel too. The only "gameplay" it has is interacting with things. It's great Mind Screw stuff. Also, it's short. Shouldn't take more than 20 minutes.
