I've replaced the last "con" with a neutral section for the statistics.
To those downvoting this, reasons beyond "I like it and Status Quo Is God" are required, as it appears to fail on almost every measure here.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Yeah, that's not even that many wiks. I've done larger renames than that by myself this week. The amount of misuse means that the renamed trope is going to have a lot less wiks.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickDefinitely, and yet the character is almost archetypal. Shocking though it may be to its fans, not everyone on earth is a Harry Potter fan. I am, so I got the trope, but if I weren't a fan I might think "Obi Wan but a school teacher" which doesn't fully encompass the trope. That's if I knew what the name meant at all, of course.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Agreed
I may be wrong but dumbledore looks to be more like a Cool Old Guy than eccentric to ne.
Make your hearth shine through the darkest night; let it transform hate into kindness, evil into justice, and loneliness into love.I know I keep coming back to this snowclone, but Crouching Fuddy Duddy Hidden Badass seems so perfect for this trope. Alternately, maybe Badass Fuddy Duddy.
The crowner states no reason that's specifically against renaming. Perhaps the 42 people voting nay should present their reasons.

"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartWell, it's completely possible that those 42 were drive-by voters who saw the crowner and thought, "Hell no, Dumbledore's cool!" and downvoted it, only to sail away on the ocean breeze of blissful ignorance with nary a backward glance.
(For the record, I had downvoted it in that spirit, but I recently switched sides.)
Indeed...that's a serious flaw with our voting system, but unfortunately it's one that I don't know that we'd be able to address.
Maybe we should require voters to specify a reason, with reasons left blank or with filler typed in discounted?
Then again, that might open up a new can of worms...
"The Daily Show has to be right 100% of the time; FOX News only has to be right once." - Jon StewartWe might just want to rule for a rename by fiat here.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Which would open up a whole new can of worms.
I still think we can get renamed consensus, but if we don't here's my suggestion: Clean up the sinkholes (and any other misuse) and lock this thread. In a couple months, when the problem has resurfaced, start a new TRS and say "See? Told ya."
I don't think failing every single one of the "reasons not to rename" criteria means we can really keep it, especially when there's rampant misuse that's all on the name. We know that fine well and have evidenced it.
There did use to be anti-rename reasons by the way, but they were either misleading, wrong, or otherwise not actually cons. For example "won't be confused with another trope" which missed the fact that it's the character it's named for that it gets confused for, which is no better.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Well, we could perhaps restart the crowner. Wasn't the one started up a really long time ago? Like a year ago ish? You could just say that THIS crowner failed, but people still have issue with the name because it's still being misused.
Restarting the crowner would definitely weed out old drive-by votes, (though at the obvious risk of collecting new ones).
An Ear Worm is like a Rickroll: It is never going to give you up.That's true. A lot has come to light since this crowner and it has been six months since it started. This thread was basically pulled back up because it was still being misused.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickA new crowner is probably a good idea. The arguments seem to have been fleshed out more, and those against have been significantly weakened, but old votes reflecting reasons that appeared stronger than they were are still counted (and people won't come back to check these things)
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.I was about to make a new crowner, but then I got to wondering if the information that's in the current crowner is up to speed. If it is, then making a new one sounds like the way to go.
Copy what's in there now, pm Madrugada to reset the crowner, make a new one and put the old stuff inside. And making a second thread for it might be best in the interest of fairness. Otherwise we're going to have about five votes.

Another vote for new thread and new crowner. Easy solution. I didn't notice that the crowner's been up since February. We're not getting any new votes on that.
I suspect that this may be a particularly bad month to try to rename this trope, what with the last Harry Potter movie having just been released and all. Much higher chance of drive-bys voting no with no reason right now, it seems to me.
Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.I really do think this is one of those very very rare cases where fiat is required; there's just no possible defence of the name except "I like it" which isn't one. Clear misuse, directly attributable to the name, which is misleading for the reason causing the misuse, and sub-par wicks/inbounds which are likely that way for the same reason. If restarting the crowner is simply a box-ticking exercise to get the right number of people to agree with this, then why bother?

My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Hmmmm...maybe we should holler and get a mod/Eddie opinion or few on this before taking any further action.
I just did that actually.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickYou have my opinion as a mod that we should force a rename, for whatever that's worth.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.
The remaining pro isn't a pro. We tend to list the number of wiks and inbounds as Neutral.
