Anyone got any recommendations for a sufficiently ACTION-PACKED ADRENALINE SLUGFEST AAAAUUUUGGGHHHHH sort of game for PC in the vein of Contra?

I need to explode some robot aliens or something.

Not quite as manly, but Cave Story has lots of guns and explosions.

Played it. Loved it. Still need to punch hideous mutants in the face. RAAAARGH.

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project closest thing I could think of

Apocalypse: Dirge Of Swans.

Expendable was good, if you can survive it being top-down. It was long ago but still looks awesome-ish.

Next week, Hard Corps: Uprising is being released on XBLA and PSN - it's actually a Contra sequel. Just doesn't have Contra in the title.

[up] He wants a PC game.

Abuse is ancient, but it should be right up your alley. It's more of Doom: The Platformer in terms of controls but it's plenty of mutant blasting fun. The original frAbs site is down, but since the game is freeware you should be able to get it via Google.

Newgrounds and other flash sites have plenty of bite-sized ones, but major Contra clones in general don't seem to have crossed over from consoles. I don't really follow the indie market on either side of The Pond so I don't know what that field holds.

I think I'll try Abuse. (Damn cybersquatters are making finding it difficult.)

Do you happen to have the Windows version or frabs yourself, bychance?

There is an old shareware game, called "Guimo", that appears to be a bit similiar. However, it's half an eternity, since I last played it, so my memory is fuzzy.

@Recon: It downloads, but won't install due to my OS version.

Why the Heck did the Fr Ab S guy let his site wither, anyway?

I was just about to recommend Abuse (Personal opinion: Its control scheme should be mandated by law for shooty platformers, NO EXCEPTIONS,) but in lieu of that, check out Jazz Jackrabbit. It's also old, but it's also awesome.

[up][up] On Vista or 7? I can't really help you there because the game worked fine on my PC for some reason. If you're on a Mac, you might want to look for the Mac version instead... which I can't help you with either.

My guess is that the Fr Abs guy/team had problems with webhosting or Real Life, just like so many other cool people on the net.

Noitu Love uses the same control scheme as Abuse, and is several sorts of awesome. It's not very Contra-like though.

I'm on 7.

Maybe I have Abuse somewhere on one of my previous computer's archive discs.

Since Abuse was made public domain ages ago, I have no qualms in linking to the abandonia page, which has the DOS version. I believe Windows 7 has a backward compatibility thing for DOS stuff, but if not, you can always use DOSbox. I'm a Mac user, so forgive me if I'm a little fuzzy on the details (speaking of which, if anyone reading this has a Mac, I'd recommend seeking out the Bungie port, as it's got a few enhancements.)

[up][up][up] Well, the unlockable character is pretty Contra-like apart from her limited range.

It's an FPS, but I think Serious Sam has the atmosphere you want.
