Surprised there isn't a recent topic for this...but in case you weren't aware, PR was bought back from Disney by Saban and now they're adapting Samurai Sentai Shinkenger over to Power Rangers! And the first episode was last night!

It was...underwhelming. Sure, it had good ground fight, but the zords weren't really cool, hate the helmets, and there's no set up. Like I've seen comments elsewhere, this felt more like Episode 3 than Episode 1. If that gives any perspective...

I heard rumours that they didn't air Episode 1.

Here's msnbc saying Power Rangers Samurai is doomed with a few sentences from Linkara of Atop The Fourth Wall.

Technically that's Avila's position, but Linkara's statements only show his hope for the series's revival.

Though his tweets...let me copy/paste them here....

Seriously. WTF is with the hairing order? This can't be the first episode o_O? Heck, I don't think all the rangers get their names mentioned in this episode? As a mid-season episode it would be good, but as a premiere?

I think they are going in the same route as some Disney shows with just throwing some random situation at you without any setup. Really unlike Nick shows. But if we compare this to its counter part's (Shinkenger) episode, it would episode 3. Personally, I didn't really like how they only started out with a random character build episode and not the usually introduction. But at the same time, I'm not going anywhere. The thing that worries me though is how the general audience is going to react. They maybe turned off by the fact that we didn't see how the rangers got their powers and stuff.

We also have to take into account that we knew what was going on in the first episode, yet we threw that aside because we naturally assumed they would do what PR usually does.

So what? Midway through the seasons we will finally get to learn all 5 rangers' names and whats going on?

[up][up]Didn't the opening have a roll call?

Yes,a stupid sounding theme song jarring roll call.

I only saw half the episode on youtube so here are my thoughts:

BULK IS BACK! BULK IS BACK! BULK IS BACK! BULK IS BACK! BULK IS.... WHERE IS SKULL! WHY is this skinny skull-looking kid with Skull's mannerisms? WHERE IS SKULL!?

I like the uniforms, I liked the ranger suits, but really.... The Cast are aesthetically displeasing, even less so than Mystic force and I thought they looked weird, but I'm not sure why. Can't put my finger on it...

Maybe it's because they're the whitest multiethnic cast I've ever soon and they're so pale it's almost sickly, I don't know.

Perhaps It's because I've only seen half an episode but did the girls seem.... Unimportant to the rest of you?

In other news, this feels too... Back To Basics? It's like acting talent and visual style and writing went straight back to the first original episodes of Mighty Morphin' only slightly better.

And uh... Power Rangers: Makes you drop out of school? I thought Saban wanted this to be silly again. What's with the whole "Must separate myself from friends and family" thing? Seems a little... dark. And Unnecessary, I mean, I don't care about Nohamotyo, people have to have still remembered at least some, if not all of the previous generations didn't need that little requirement. And how do you even justify that in series? Can I preemptively call Fridge Logic?

In other news, , the theme song as a remake of the original is both good and bad. I mean it sounds cool, but the lyrics sound less so.

The girls had like no role in the episode. Neither did the blue ranger. This felt more like a third episode than a first. And from what I heard, it's ripped from the pages of Shinkenger as well, practically.

[up][up] Yeah but I was talking about the episode proper. None of the girls are named. Heck, I think between all two of them, they have 4 lines of dialogue. Their sensei is not named. As for the villains, what little we are given is just puzzling. They need human tears to raise a river to drown the human world.... Why? How? Just WHO are these villains? Demons, Aliens, mutants ...? Heck, BULK is not introduced. I mean, We know who he is, but for the kids and new viewers, who the heck is that guy and that scrawny kid? Bulk's ONE scene is ENTIRELY unrelated to the plot.

Seriously hoping the real first episode comes out soon. Also, PR: Samurai is opening this Friday on Nick Canada. Wonder if we will get the same airing order (probably, but stranger things have happened).

Am I the only one who really didn't like the first episode save for the music?

Then again Power Rangers RPM is a huge pair of shoes to fill in.

[up] I didn't like it in the slightest, I was just fanboying over certain aspects.

Huh, actually, I cared so little for the plot I'm paying attention to... everything else.

Seriously, does the cast not look odd to anyone else? Like too... official Too.... upstanding? I mean the SPD cast were police-people and they didn't looks this upstanding and dull.

[up]More then that, the cast seems wooden, and pretty much exist as story puppets from the first episode. I really hope it changes up.

[up]Probably not helped that most of them don`t have any role in the damn episode. Outside of Green and Red as The Ace.

Eitherway, hoping we get the real first episode soon so we can see the rest of the cast

I am probably judging it so early, but I'm pissed that the fandom is being so lenient on this season.

Some are. A lot over at another message board are getting into this episode for not acting like a first episode. Hopefully future episodes will prove fruitful.

[up][up] Meh, I am on the fence, so far:

Cast: Can't judge em. I like the guy playing Mike, but he's the only one with any screen time so far, so that's why. Still, so far all I can judge them on is "Do I like his/her face or not"

Costumes: I mostly like them. LOVE the helmet (Though the Red Rangers keeps making me think of a bug, like he's a long lost Beetle Borg). Only thing I don't like of the costumes are the legs. Never liked costumes where the legs are a different color from the top. Love the Morphing Sequence.

Zords: Individually, Shit. Ugly, not interesting. Love the Megazord though. Reminds me of the Thunder Megazord.

Villains: Don't know enough. Not really impress by their appearance so far.

The Episode: As a mid-season episode it would be adequate. As a premier? Its TERRIBLE.

Did I sound lenient?

Anyhow, an episode is going on at noon today so I'll actually watch that on TV and begin to judge.

[up]I'm talking about certain sites. "It's okay to be cheesy!" and such, even though the cheesiness isn't really... you know... the "right" kind of cheesiness.

Anyway, second ep is a bit better than the first, but still feels eh.

Oh god... this acting is.... ugh.... It's too cheesy. Like 90's cheesy. It's almost intolerable....

My god.... I don't believe it.

You meant to tell me this is.....

PIRATES VERSUS SAMURAI!? That's like, what One Japanese warrior archetype away from Pirates versus Ninja?

I admit, the food thing was pretty funny.

Some lines were great and so many others were too cheesy. I can't decide if I like this or not, it's like for every thing I like something else makes it hard to like.

Some of the zords look interesting on their own, others less so. The combined form looks pretty okay.

I really am wondering what purpose Bulk has here, I mean I'm glad he's back and the scenes he's in are funny but even when they were only tangentially involved Bulk and Skull usually did something interesting related to the lives of the characters outside of being rangers. Wait, coming to the end and I see... Why is he and Spike hanging around little league?

Paulie Schrier's in this? Didn't know that. I expect they'll be broadcast in the right order when/if they get here, but all these comments  *

aren't leading me to expect I'll want to watch to the third episode.

In fairness, I expect everyone on staff is still feeling their way production wise, and some of them might be a bit rusty.

...is out to lunch.
