Sergey coughed a bit more until his head was surrounded by smoke before waving it away and standing up, as he saw Shaun being there he quickly went to him.

Mankey: <Hey, so, my dad's been really down lately, so I've gotta make him proud! Don't think I'll go easy on you!>

Gus: <Yeah, well, I've gotta make Scarlette and my dad proud! I can't let you win!>

Mankey: <I'm gonna make my dad prouder then!>

Hala: Mankey, Focus Energy!

-The Mankey inhales, then exhales sharply, readying himself.-

Scarlette: Gus, we're at a disadvantage, so you gotta make sure he doesn't hit you! Sand Attack!

-Gus shakes some sand out of his coat and kicks it in the Mankey's face.-

Mankey: <Ahh! My eyes!>

Hala: Try to aim with a Karate Chop!

-The Mankey swings at where he thinks Gus is, but Gus jumps out of the way of the Mankey's arms.-

Scarlette: Good! Now, uh, run around and Tackle him!

-As the Mankey stumbles to try to find Gus through the sand in his eyes, Gus rams into him from the side, sending him teetering sideways.-

Mankey: <Aaaaaah! Come on!>

Hala: Try again!

-A second time, the Mankey swings, and a second time he misses.-

Gus: <I told you I need to win this!>

Scarlette: Bite him!

-Gus comes at the Mankey again from the side, chomping down on his arm.-

Mankey: <Ouch!>

Gus: <Mrrrrph!>

-Gus bites down harder, shaking a bit. In desperation, the Mankey swings its other arm around and, by sheer chance, manages to slam it down on Gus's head.-

-Gus yelps and lets go, stumbling back from the splitting headache he now has.-

Gus: <Owwwwww...>

Scarlette: Gus! Are you okay? That looks like it really hurt...

-Gus blinks a bit, reorienting himself, then yips.-

Gus: <I can still do this!>

-The Mankey, meanwhile, isn't looking nearly as confident.-

Mankey: <Oof... gotta hang in here...>

Scarlette: I think we can finish him off with this one! One more Tackle!

-Gus nods, and charges at the Mankey one more time. The impact sends him sprawling backward.-

Mankey: <I'm... sorry, dad, I'll win next time...>

Alli: Yes, we did it!

Locke:'. This should be simple.

-They head in deeper-

Oran OS: Should've warned you, ma'am, Mr. Blake has sharp ears.

Woman: -looks to her present company, then to Culverton Blake, then grins-

Woman: Oh, you want the Gardener? Don't worry, he's the best we've got.

-They ram the Rattata on both sides with Flame Charges.-

-The Makuhita launches forward and bops Gus deceptively lightly on the nose.-

-He whirls around and uses an Arm Thrust on the side of Gus's face. The Rockruff whimpers as it's smacked to the side, unconscious.-

Scarlette: Gus!

-She fumbles for Gus's Poke Ball to recall him-

Scarlette: It's okay, you did well enough. Calliope, it's up to you!

Calliope: <Finally! This is the big one, right?>

Makuhita: <You bet it's the big one!>

Hala: Arm Thrust!

Makuhita: <The big SMACKDOOOOOOOWN>

-He starts smacking Calliope around.-

Calliope: <Oof! Come on, you call that a smackdown?>

Scarlette: Disarming Voice!

Calliope: <I got a worse "smackdown" from a Ledyba!>

-Calliope laughs very loudly.-

-The Makuhita blinks, and slumps.-

Makuhita: <...R-really?>

Hala: Keep up the Arm Thrusts!

Makuhita: <R-right... I just gotta try harder for a better SMACKDOOOOOOOWN!>

-He starts swinging again, hitting Calliope a few more times. It hurts, but Calliope isn't thrown off by it. He starts singing in a mocking, singsong voice.-

Calliope: <You're not good enough, you're not good enough~>

Makuhita: <S-stop it! I've gotta be good enough!>

Scarlette: Quick, before he does something else, Aqua Jet!

Calliope: <Think fast!>

-Calliope rockets forward on a wave of water and crashes into the Makuhita, toppling it.-

Makuhita: <Oof... I've gotta be... better...>

Calliope: <Hah! I've got this in the bag! Heck, I feel better than I've ever been!>

-He hasn't quite noticed that he's starting to be enveloped in a glow.-

-Mister Bateman smiles and nods.-

(As the Rattata falls, there is a conspicuous glint from the Z-Crystal mounted on the podium at the very back of the cavern.)

(There is also the sound of movement. Sounds that suggest the presence of creatures much larger than the others.)

-She charges in, dragging Locke with her-

(And on cue, out leap a Gumshoos and an Alolan Raticate, both far larger than is normal for their species.)

Totem Gumshoos: <Tremble before the might of the Totem Pokemon, humans!>

Totem Raticate: <...uh, what he said!>

(The attacks don't do nearly as much to the Totems as they did to their minions, though the Flamethrower seems to affect the Totem Raticate somewhat. She yelps and recoils.)

Totem Gumshoos: <Mwahahahaha! You think your puny attacks can harm us?>

Totem Raticate: <Uh, what he said oh Arceus I'm freaking out here>

Totem Gumshoos: <C'mon, just pull yourself together and Bite 'em!>

Totem Raticate: <O-okay!>

(Both Totems indeed attempt to Bite their opponents.)
