Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

There ARE no "Oedipal undertones" in the comic!

Well, there was that scene in OMD were May calls Peter "Tiger". Actually, OMD in general could be argued as having some squicky Oedipal vibes when it comes to Peter and May's relationship but I'd say it's more the exception than the rule.

Well, it's just OMD. OMD has a different set of standards, internationally recognized as "NONE".

Sadly, the shippers of that madness shall only pile up, what's with aunt May getting progressively younger and prettier until the Civil War movie dropped the ultimate one by openly acknowledging this is happening now("surprisingly hot legal guardian etc").

I admit, it's not often that I say "this woman should not be sexualized", but can we agree on that for aunt May?

I agree Aunt May shouldn't be sexualized, but I have nothing against making her younger. She isn't supposed to be Great-Aunt May.

Then again, that's a retcon that should be mostly done with teenaged versions of Peter.

[up] The Amazing movies gave her a fairly adequate age, but these days liking those is apparently a federal offense.

Ultimate May was pretty young too.

[up] She also was the single most fucking badass May ever.

That's Captain America she's slapping on the last panel. I miss the Ultimate Universe, I really do.

Didn't 616 May did feed the Chameleon cyanide cookies once?

I still think Felicia's gradually going to go back to normal, while I'd like her to keep her queenpin role the fact there's some valour in her deeds already shows it'll blow up in her face when there's a conflict of interest with her group who want to move in a different direction.

Peter and MJ have very weird battle strategies in the newspaper strip

Peter spends the whole fight with Xandu trying to get him to weaken the hold he has over Nightmare, and MJ pretends to be interested in him, it's such a random thing that I've had to headcanon that Xandu is using more powerful blasts to impress her and because he's irritated by Spidey, as it never really comes across clear to the reader what the writer is up to with this.

@windleopard: They weren't actually cyanide. She just slipped Chameleon an almond-flavored Mickey Finn to knock him out and make him think he was poisoned with cyanide.

[up][up][up] Which is funny when you remember Felicia was first introduced as a criminal. [down] Well if you steal suff for a living that makes you a criminal of the law. Like with Catwoman authorities try to arrest her regardless of her good deeds.

That's just these damn crazy shippers being physically unable to look at any normal human interaction without assuming sex must be involved somehow.

Fixed it for you. tongue

For what it's worth, the MCU version of Aunt May is surprisingly attractive, it was Tony Stark (and only Tony Stark) who raised the point, and he didn't actually do anything beyond raise the point.

And then it turns out that they got Xandu blast Nightmare and free him again.

[up] A quote comes to mind from a comic I can't remember where Peter comments on how people forget that he's really smart that I think applies to this situation.

616 May also decked Man-Wolf with a tea tray once.

And put out Wolverine's cigarette right in his face

That's all Modern Age, however.

Silver and Bronze Age Aunt May was annoying dead weight that at most would have nagged to people without even being taken into notice.

Ben and May both tend to look too old. IIRC Ben was a teenager when Richard was a baby. Still a pretty big difference for siblings but they way they're typically drawn it looks even bigger.

I always thought it was supposed to be a very large age difference between the siblings, which is why they were so close (i.e. a surrogate father-son relationship rather than just a sibling relationship).

I think one of the CBR links i posted a few days ago had May showing Peter a photo album with the brothers. Could go looking at that if you want to see the canonical age difference.

Edit: Post 10023 btw.

Seems the Spider-Man Unlimited game will have "unmasked" variants for each of their characters. Mayday will have the long hair she had from 2006-2010, which interests me for some reason.

I've been checking out some of the stuff I've missed.

Dead No More sounds a lot like Blackest Night, though since the Jackal's involved it's probably just clones again. I hope not, though: I've been waiting for Marvel to genuine reverse the deaths of Connors' family - especially his son - for ages now. In vain of course, because Spider-Man doesn't typically have plotlines like that, The Cosmic Retcon aside.

Hence "it's probably clones." But still...

I'm surprised they didn't title it "I Still Really, Really Hate Clones."

It says there that it's supposedly going to have Jackal go beyond cloning and blur the lines between life and death. Maybe he'll start dabbling in magic or make a deal with Mephisto or something.

I doubt that's going to deliver on what it promises, but I'd be amused if they technobabbled/magic-babbled Jackal into making clones so perfect that the original souls of the dead people returned to inhabit their bodies why not.
