Spider-Man General Discussion

Go To

This thread's for the Spider-Man comics and spin-offs, whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate Spider-Man, Spider-Man "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • Spider-Man 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales, Spider-Woman, Silk, Spider-Gwen, Venom, Carnage, Black Cat, Red Goblin and Spider-Verse.
  • Characters and comics that originated in Spider-Man but are no longer directly connected to the spider-franchise (e.g. Punisher, Silver Sable) are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their Spider-Man stories here.

Discussions that are only about Spider-Man adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

     Original Thread OP
Since everyone likes talking about him. I know little about him(Ironically,I got nearly all I know about him from a Batman thread),but he's apparently important so I made this thread. Enjoy.

The movie was better than Spider-Man 1 but I don't want to compare it to Spider-Man 2.

When I first saw the new film, I thought it was about as good as the first one. Since then, I've been thinking about it more and more, seeing what other people thought about it and talked amongst my friends about it and now I'm teetering on calling it the weakest of the 4 films.

Weaker than Spider-Man 3? I call shenanigans.

[up]I'd rather watch Spider-Man 3 than this one again. Whether or not it's "better" than this one, I haven't bothered to go back and watch it (intently) in the past couple of months to say confidently.

I do know 3 well enough to know it's not the offensive slight against humanity people tend to act like it is though.

Amazing Spider-Man isn't bad, I'd say, but it's about adequate and nothing more for me.

[up]That's the general consensus, which I'm fine with. I just wasn't a fan.

My favorite books in the Spidey-Family are Venom and Scarlet Spider. I cant wait for their minimum carnage team up.

Yeah. The preview Pic is Carnage tiny by a Syringe. And behind him are Venom and Scarlet Spider's Mask's fusing into one. Its coming in October.

Apparently Minimum Carnage is a Crossover starting in Minimum Carnage Alpha then going between Scarlet Spider and Venom. It involves Carnage escaping to the Microverse and Venom and Kaine chasing after him.

Oh my God, this is the most magnificant thing ever.

I have to say, Steampunk and Spider-Man go together amazingly well, probably thanks to the fact that SM is all about the wonders and menaces of scientific progress.

Of those, my favorite are the Green Goblin, Doc Ock and Scorpion. Also, I love that Venom gives off a reverse Jekyll/Hyde vibe there.

@ Dpr: They're actually using the Microverse? I thought that was one of those action figure tie-in comics Marvel don't have the rights to anymore?

Doc Ock really lends himself to a Steampunk interpretation, doesn't he?

Didn't he originally control the arms via a control box?

You know Im sad that Peter and Johnny were only roomies for like a month. They could have really done something with that.

[up][up]Well, before the accident which rendered him insane, Otto did use some kind of control panel to manipulate his mechanical arms.

Man, I really hope Slott doesn't tank the quality of his run with #700. I've loved what I've read of it so far ("Nobody Dies," which I just read today, may be one of my all-time favorites), but he's apparently said that in his opinion, #700's big twist will be the single most controversial thing that's ever been done in a Spider-Man comic, and joked that he'd have to go into hiding after it's published so he doesn't get ripped to shreds by angry fans. Given that Spider-Man has starred in some of the all-time greats when it comes to infamous comics, I'm not sure I can even comprehend what could possibly beat out those, and I really hope it doesn't sully Slott's reputation, because he doesn't deserve it.

The most likely possibilities fans seem to be considering, going by number of guesses at CBR, seem to be the following:

  • Mary Jane dies
  • Peter dies
  • Peter kills
  • Peter hangs up the webs for good

Based on comments by Alonso and the fact that Peter will soon be taking on a sidekick (training a successor?), I personally think the last one is the most likely.

[up]Meh, the last one is obviously not going to last (even less than the first two, I mean). Maybe he is doing another bullshit retcon? Bullshit retcon is what OMD and Clone Saga have in common, after all.

[up] That retcon'd have to be pretty bullshit to result in a fall from grace for Slott. Haven't disliked a single thing I've read of the man's work so far.

[up]Well, even if it is marvelously executed in a way no previous Spider Man story have ever did, I can see people getting pissed. Controversial doesn't mean bad, after all. It is just something that won't leave everybody happy.

Well, in the end, I think we can at last believe it will be of good quality, even if not enjoyable. The man is a good writer, after all. Even if the overall decision is bad, I think the writing will worth it.

Anyway, suggestions for possible controversial things:

  • Aunt May dies.
  • Gwen Stacy gets resurrected.
  • Uncle Ben gets resurrected.
  • The current Peter is a clone and the current clone is the real one.
  • The current Peter is a clone and the real one is still married with MJ.
  • The current Peter is a clone and the real one is married with Gwen Stacy somewhere else.

Okay, most of these are jokes*

, but the first two were not. They sound something that would certainly piss people off while still having some potential to be good*.

Btw, Slott is not going out after that issue, right? It would totally sucks if he drops a bombshell and leaves for another writer to flesh it out.

Edit: Oh, apparently there is a clone Gwen Stacy walking around and being completely forgotten! Maybe he will bring her back.tongue That actually would be a way to do really controversial things*

while not being completely retarded*.
