The Power of Cheese was a title I thought up when puns were acceptable for their own sake, and since I don't hold to that now, I don't hold to that with my own tropes (okay, I don't actually own them, but you know what I mean). And there is some confusion with this and Blessed Are The Cheesemakers, since that actually has to do with cheese, and this doesn't.

In another thread, that apparently got lost, Commercial Induced Stupidity was one of the popular choices.

To be clear, by "too similar" you are referring to the name? The tropes themselves are obviously quite different.

I'm not seeing a need to rename The Power of Cheese. Are the wicks showing misuse?

[up][up] Yes, I mean the names.

[up] There was support in the old thread, due to the similarity of the names and dissimilarity of the tropes.

I don't see why it needs to be changed either. It doesn't even seem pun-y, it's simply named for the most triumphant example of the trope.

There comes a time when one must decide: should I set that on fire, or not?

I found myself guessing what each trope was going for rather easily and managed to identify The Power of Cheese from its name. I might have heard the pun elsewhere in a case of concurrant evolution (which still speaks in its favour) but I think that the use of "the power of..." here push it in the right direction.

"it's simply named for the most triumphant example of the trope."

That's a subjective trope, so it should not be used for a rename argument (for or against).

Also, simply naming a trope for something doesn't necessarily indicate what the trope is. Sure the song "Cat's in the cradle" is an example of a neglectful father, but it was agreed to be a poor way to tell us what the trope is, so we chose the lyric When You Coming Home, Dad?, which is both an example and tells us what the trope is.

The only possible mistake I could see with this trope is that people might mistake it for how So Bad, It's Good works can become much more popular then works that are actually good - i.e. the power of "cheese". However, with no real sign of misuse, I think it's fine.

1. [up]Limits on what you think might happen do not actually mean the outcomes are limited to that.

2. This has only 34 wicks, and 157 inbounds, not really an indicator of a healthy trope name considering how old it is. Remember, a working name also means there has to be a lot of wicks in addition to little misuse.

Yes, but that also depends on how common of a trope it is, doesn't it? There may not be many easy examples of a trope like this in normal works.

Well some works often mock how commercials are done.
