redirect farming: Vichy Earth

Yeah, the trouble is that the pre-existing term "Vichy" refers to the puppet collaborative government. This trope is about aliens taking over and ruling the planet, no puppets necessary. Knowing the reference doesn't make the title more clear; it makes the title actively misleading.

^ ...Which is why we're talking about splitting the trope in the first place. Spinning off "alien occupation without puppet intermediaries" into its own trope would allow Vichy Earth to keep its title and make that title more accurate.

Can we just add a crowner on splitting this thing and cease with the inane circuituous arguments.

I'm still very much for splitting, and I think Puppet Earth Government should at the very least be a redirect, if not the main title for what Vichy Earth sounds like.

Why does the crowner assume that renaming Vichy Earth is mutually exclusive with a split?

They aren't exclusive. If they were both green, we would do both.

I think they are being treated as mutually exclusive, though in the event of a split, I'd opt to keep renaming still on the table anyways. Nothing says either trope has to have the same name as the original one.

Well, I added a note to the rename option in the crowner to try to avoid the implication that it's mutually exclusive, though someone else might be able to write it up more clearly.

I had already voted both the split and rename options up, FWIW, though I think the split is the bigger, more important issue. Really, I'm almost borderline on the name.

We seem to have consensus to split and we really ought to resolve this to help clear out the TRS backlog.

Need a name for the non-Vichy version. Aliens Rule Earth? Welcome Our Alien Overlords?

If we're throwing out names, I have a few:

• Subjugated Earth

• Earth Under Alien Masters

• The Little Green Man's Burden

• Reverse Space Colonization

I'd avoid specific mentions of Earth, because I imagine that this trope would be about any instance where a human settlement was conquered and ruled by aliens, regardless of whether it was the original location of humans (i.e. Earth) or not. Plus, it would be just as applicable for a non-human species seeing their planet conquered by forces from a different planet.

I like Subjugated By Aliens, myself.

Hm, the instance in Battlestar Galactica Reimagined seems like it would apply.

How about just Occupied Earth? Or maybe Aliens Occupying Earth if we want to be a little more specific.

Time to start working on making the new trope and splitting the examples.

How many examples/wicks for Vichy Earth currently involve Les Collaborateurs? So many examples on this page are just about an Occupied Earth that I'm wondering if there are even three examples of the other definition?

At best, I can probably come up with one example (not on the page or in any wicks) that would only be a mere invocation.

How is the split coming?

I don't think it's happened at all. Should I just split or take it to YKTTW to see if I can pick up a few more examples of aliens ruling the Earth? Downside is that I don't really have time to do either for a few weeks.

Also, several examples don't even involve Earth.
