The Slender Man Mythos

In the middle of watching Tribe Twelve. Ehh, not gonna lie, it doesn't engage me the same way EMH and MH did. I don't think its its own series in the same way Eveyman HYBRID is. EMH created a distinct feel to itself, like I said before. Tribe Twelve just apes Marble Hornets way too much. It also has the weakest acting of any Slender series I've seen; the banter between Milo and Noah in the early videos feels REALLY forced. That isn't to say it isn't genuinely creepy and I intend to stick with it. I just think it doesn't do enough to have a real identity of its own.

Another thing that hurts it is that its 'just' Slendy so far; having proxies or different entities either made Slendy's appearances more special or added to the mystery of the setting. I also feel, and this is pretty nitpicky at this point, that SM is a bit too unsubtle in this incarnation. Slendy isn't shown to have possibly killed anyone on screen until #23 in MH, and I don't think he's badly hurt anyone in EMH yet, though there may be some background material I missed. To me, the Slenderman works better as a passive observer/harbinger of events, like the G-Man from Half-Life or the Mothman (Which of course led me to think of a crossover between all the mysterious, sumpernatural '-man's who form some Omniscient Council of Vagueness). He's still Malevolent and can still fucking kill you, but he isn't the kind of thing that'll see that as first option.

Anywho, SM speculation time! For EMH, I think its pretty obvious that The Rake is HABIT's enforcer (or at the very least, on his leash for the time being) and that HABIT and Slendy are NOT playing for the same teams. The relationship between Slendy and The Masked Man/totheark in MH, though, is more clouded. Any thoughts on that?

I was reading the WMG thingy for Marble Hornets, and I'm somewhat conflicted on whether Masky is evil or not. On the one hand, he attacked Jay on multiple occasions. On the other hand...there was entry 19, where he could have hurt Jay the entire time but just sat there being ominous and creepy.

I think he's trying to keep Jay away from Slender Man, but he's so cracked in the head that he can't do anything rationally and comes across as antagonistic. Just my two cents; I'd like to think there's someone in this series who's actually trying to help Jay even if he's not very successful at it.

Tribe Twelve...eh, the acting kind of sucks, but the Slender Man effects are very good. THOSE TENTACLES EUGH.

Well I don't think he's 'helping' him as much as leading him to accomplish something, what that something is is the million dollar question. #26 implies that Masky/totheark wants Jay to link up with Alex to do something, to 'help' him. What the factions are though are ill-defined, there could be anywhere between one and three. Any thoughts on the EMH factions?

Where are the spectacular tentacle effects, btw? I missed them in my go through so far, up to him getting the the call on the cellphone.

It's not just the acting, it just doesn't feel like its own series the same way EMH did compared to MH. You know what I mean?

Paul...that's from that Adult Swim sketch, right? And you can see the tentacles at the very end of Unknown Caller, plus a flash of them at the end of the funky HELLOTHERE video. I do know what you mean, though. It's trying to be its own thing, but it needs to break away from the standard "run around with video panicking look through archive footage OH GOD SLENDER MAN creepy totheark expy" stuff.

I haven't seen any of EMH (the prospect of digging through the various mediums is a little daunting), so I can't offer any thoughts on that.

For EMH, This is a life savor. If you use this as a guide, It'll be much easier to follow things. You can skip most of the Ustreams, just read the cliffnotes, as well as most of CANYOUSEETHEWORDS ramblings. For Geo-caching/ARG stuff, just read the articles from the timeline. All the Twitter shit is summarized pretty well in the timelines.

....wait a minute, her blog's name is CANYOUSEETHEWORDS, and there are hidden words in her blogs background.... She's on to something...

Anywho, I liked how Slendy turned out in #26 of MH. EMH's slendy can be a tad on the hokey side at times (I swear they're using a cardboard cut out of him when they try to ram him with their car), but it doesn't ruin the experience.

EMH: More entertaining then MH, but not better, per se.

TT: Not as good as the other too, but not horrible, but not good either.

MH: The best, but not that entertaining.

EMH and MH are tied for me, because they are both engaging for different reasons. EMH is the most expansive, almost feels like this could be a TV show or something. It definitely has a tone that sets it apart from MH. TT isn't horrible, but it isn't that creative and everything feels... stock. It just feels like an inferior MH, whereas EMH went in its own direction. I think the best scare in the Slender Vlogs still has to be when Masky appears out of fucking nowhere in Jay's room, perched on the dresser like fucking Batman.

The scariest scare(ha) for me would have to be vwhen Masky is just SITTING on that goddammed couch when J turns around.

How is MH not entertaining though? It's not as enthralling in the same sense as EMH, but its minimalism has its own charm. I hope 34 is up by Wednesday though.

I've only seen MH and TT. MH is better. It's scarier, has better acting, etc. But TT has some neat special effects and I like how their version of Slendy is so inhuman.
