I believe her views are only taking seriously in the US. The rest of the world probably only knows her from Popcultural Osmosis.
hashtagsarestupidOr from Futurama, which is probably the first time I ever heard of her.
Mutant: This is our library, but it's only composed of books other people have flushed down the toilet.
Bender: [leafing through the collection] Nothing but crumpled porno and Ayn Rand!

It's not over. Not yet.Come to think of it, Yahtzee actually references Rand derisively quite often.
So rewording, does anyone outside of America give a damn about Rand?
"Everyone wants an answer, don't they?... I hate things with answers." — Grant MorrisonI live outside of the U.S.A., and have heard of her/read half of Atlas Shrugged before giving up. I dislike her, whatever that's worth.
I have been on the internet for more than five minutes though. So I have been witness to many pro-Rand/anti-Rand flame wars. I know from experience I'm not typical, as I have brought her up in social situations and no-one else has ever known of her (some much older people half-remembered her as "the enemy" from the sixties once).
@ Malkavian- I'm European, and I have read and liked We the living.
"Why don't you write books people can read?"-Nora Joyce, to her husband JamesI mainly know about her in reference to bioshock. Tropes, wikipedia, and Amazon have filled in some gaps. I'm hardly an expert but she strikes me as more anti-communist than pro-capitalist.
OT, Rape is love is always strange. I read about him here the other week, and that Heinlein guy sounds just weird.
Yes he is. His books are good though.

hashtagsarestupidIsn't most of the time the molestation junk happening, the heroine seems to act like she wants it/already in it? That's something I think carries a lot of connotation if she makes it seem like a norm (or should be a norm) to be a ideal woman, I guess, is to like, approve and enjoy Rape Is Love style sex and getting some when you didn't want or expect it is ok.
Of course, it's been a bit since I read any Rand and I usually skipped those particular scenes since that dragged down an already tedious story.

I don't know, most of the people I know have at least heard of her, though I'm the only one who's read anything of hers.
Ayn Rand making her heroes (hot!) rapists on the other hand outright contradicts her message of personal integrity. But it does fit her message of unrestricted capitalism and family values.
Thank you for introducing me to Heinlein, thread. I don't think I'll sleep the night...
Fair few Russians, seeing as she was born there.
What's precedent ever done for us?
