^^^^ Many of the skills are good just by reading them though...  *

For example, the Medic's salve skill heals the entire party, simple common sense is enough to let you know that it will come in handy even if you haven't tried it. The same goes for Gunner's ricochet and the Hexer's Sacrifice, those two are likely to become really really powerful (Game-Breaker for Sacrifice). The Bard's "Relaxing" should be another example.

"here's a pitfall", and "miss one jump and you die because there is no floor beneath you"

Pitfalls are kinda pointless if you don't die or take massive damage that results in death from falling into them. Pitfall deaths are a staple of platformers. It's why many people like them.

if the game let you just naturally progress through the game without ever having to deviate then that would make the game easy because then there would be no work in figuring out how to beat something...Devil Survivor even if you got the strategy to kill the boss it still didn't mean jack if you weren't good at the game, even if you had the perfect set-up in EO it still didn't mean jack if you couldn't pick the right moves. Really try killing the final boss without knowing his AI rotation and the Paladin Elemental Blocks, and I really don't think you could've have figured out both without a guide either.
For the first part, many  * RP Gs today are exactly as you described. You don't NEED to deviate and gain some levels, you can easily beat many of them from the levels gained going through it. That was especially obvious in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Devil Survivor wasn't that hard even if you play the hardest route first though. Like I explained above. You don't need an extensive knowledge of all the best fusions and you can still beat the game if you just pick a select few skills...and give all your physical attackers Pierce and realize to what extent Pierce actually works(when they don't work, use a spell). The hardest part in Devil Survivor was memorizing which routes to take to save who and grinding to beat Lucifer. But beating him is only optional.

Also, there is an easier way to kill the final boss in Etrian Odyssey than memorizing his rotation and using specific abilities. Just disable him with force skills like Dominate and the Gunner's 100% stun shot or the Protector's absolute defence for one turn ability.

^ Funny thing about me...words not fitting lips don't bother me that much if it's animated...since I'm the kind of person who didn't mind a character's mouth being glued shut despite talking. Chalk that up to playing old games before moving lips existed.

[up] Ah, then I'm happy to report that they didn't try to religiously follow the lip flaps.

Granted they did try to in some parts (inflection can be hard to ignore when it involves obvious shouty faces or especially long pauses), and in the parts where they didn't, it looks odd to have the lips and voices out of synch, but at least they... don't talk with... odd pauses and E Mphasis because the... japaneselanguagehasstrange inflection compared to... English.

If it hasn't been answered, the gameplay in Xenoblade/Monado is nothing like Xeno Gears. Don't know if that's a good thing to you but it is to me. The constant jabbering during the fights seems like it could get really irritating though. Maybe the final product or at least the translation replaced some of their lines with sound effects or grunts.(Or at least made them funny)

Except Gunners weren't in the first EO, and Salve is useful but you can't spam it without running out of TP pretty quickly, and I don't know what game you're playing but without knowing the AI Roulette the Bonus Boss will use an auto-kill attack plus you can't use dominate every turn or the gunner stun skills every turn either.

And yeah you can totally beat Devil Survivor using the first three demons you get, you don't even have to fuse at all, yeah right, you realize you can't give pierce to everyone unless you screw around with the fusion system a lot, pierce can only be given to one person from the initial crack.

And besides FFTA, which I haven't played, what other games let you progress without deviation? Because I really can't think of any and according to you no deviation is a good thing.

I like the ability to deviate a bit.

Actually, I like it when the devs work deviation into the story by cooking up a One True Sequence plot, so that your choices never feel "wrong".

I...hope they don't replace them with grunts. That's the last thing I want actually...

For me, best case scenario is dual audio with subtitles. So everybody happy! Hate reading? Switch to english language! Can not stand the dub? Switch to subtitles!

Also, english voice actors can not do female voices, but this part is off-topic.

Theres an item the recovers your gauge, so you can pretty consistently keep your party safe from the boss even if he can take you down in one turn.
And yeah you can totally beat Devil Survivor using the first three demons you get, you don't even have to fuse at all, yeah right, you realize you can't give pierce to everyone unless you screw around with the fusion system a lot, pierce can only be given to one person from the initial crack.

I think you misinterpreted what I said. NOT fusing past the first 3 demons would be an extreme form of Cherry Tapping. What I mean is that even a newbie who doesn't take the time to learn about the mechanics of the game will go to auctions and fuse monsters as the game intended you to. You just don't need extensive knowledge of whats the best demons and what's the best what in order to beat the game. The fusion system isn't complicated to begin with. After 2 cycles, most or all players would know how skill transfer works.

Like how you DON'T need to know about EV/IV in Pokemon to beat the game and catch them all. You can just play and battle on your way to each gym leader and you can beat it.

And besides FFTA, which I haven't played, what other games let you progress without deviation? Because I really can't think of any and according to you no deviation is a good thing.
Never Winter Nights, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2, Rondo Of Swords, Final Fantasy 3, Revenant Wings, and any other games I can't remember. And if you let me take some liberties on the definition of RP Gs, Kingdom Hearts and the Castlevania games that lets you level up, and Oboro Muramasa.

I don't think the DV Ds used for Wii games have enough room for dual audio.

They always sound 10 years too old...I like characters who are meant to be young and cute SOUND young and cute. English voice actors can do old/middle aged ladies just fine though, for example, Rip Van Winkle was good in English.

Maybe I shoulda shoehorned The Last Story into this thread's title, because I wanted to discuss that game too....

^ Fragile Dreams is Dual Audio....in fact, I REALLY wanna buy that game, the visuals and art works are really pretty...but I hear it's more of an exploration atmospheric game...and it's relatively short. If I could trade in my old games to buy it at a cheaper price though...

Meanwhile, the only reliable way of voice acting young boys is with ladies. It's a crazy world we live in.

Well, The Last Story is officially No Export for You, so...

No plans to export it yet. This is not the same as 'we plan on not releasing it overseas'. If it does well in Japan it'll probably cross the pond

apparently voices of little boys piss people off in real life...I would know, I was one myself, and when I grew up, my volunteer work involved dealing with those little ill-mannered demons...

Let's hope The Last Story does good then. The game looks fun. And the company making it NEEDS this game to be successful to stay alive.

And the Wii needs more JRPG dammnit...

Question for those who know the game's system: is it a JRPG, or more of a straight action/exploration title?

Eh, grunts, yells and heavy breaths are more realistic. Constant spews of dialog during physical activity annoy me, its hard to speak while physically performing in reality.

It's a JRPG

Same goes for the crazy weapons, improbable ages, good looking characters, and cool outfits.  *

PS-I sang a perfect (by an amateur singer's standard) How Much Is That Puppy in the Window? while doing pull-ups...the PE teacher joked about giving us bonus points if we sang a song while doing it in fitness testing.

Hard to speak while performing physical activity my butt.....although I got bits of the song wrong.

Pushups for workout yes. Now try and sing while racing Brock Lesnar to a 200 pushup contest.

Yeah, you can hold conversation while hitting the speed bag, its a little harder in the middle of a boxing match. Most boxers who talk trash do so while out of reach or during tie ups, not while punching, dodging or blocking.

So...how do you expect characters to call their attacks in lots of previously existing games?

'ZA WARUDO!', 'BURN BABY BURN!', 'DANCE WATER DANCE!', 'Getsuga Tenshou!', and almost every single RPG game with spell casters have them casting spells by chanting something along with arm movements, even in the midst of battle.

You can't say those characters are doing light exercise during their fights...okay, maybe Demyx was, but not the others.

Lol, reading this now, it's hard to believe Xenoblade ended turning out to be renowned as one of the, if not the best RPG of the last gaming generation, and ended up not suffering the fate of being an obscure game like Mother did. XD
